I first ran across it about 1978 or '79 while working at Pertec (this was right after they had bought MITS). I saw it at a trade show running on some sort of time-share system, and mentioned it to a visiting friend who worked for DEC. He said they had it running on a PDP-10 (I think) in his lab. I asked him about the possibility of getting a copy so I could run it on my CP/M system (I had a fortran compiler from my work at Pertec). He laughed in that DEC-is-superior-to-whatever-you-have way and said that such a thing was totally impossible, that it took way more processor than a mere Z-80 and hugely more than 56k(!) of memory. Of course, lots of us had gone to the same trade show, so we were talking about it at work too. So, it was interesting when, a few days later, one of the software guys was handing out 8" floppies to a select few. Worked fine, but was a bit slow because it had to hit the disk for everything. I believe it was the full 500 point version, but I have no idea what language it was written in, or how many generations of porting it had been through. Isaac

My first encounter with Adventure was some time in the late '70s when a friend of mine, who was doing some contract work in a shop running a DECsystem 2020 (or whatever it was called) phoned me at work and said that I absolutely MUST come over after work and see this wonderful new game. I went over and we spent most of the night playing with it. I later got my hands on a DEC .SAV tape with a PDP-11 binary, which inspired me to try to write a PDP-11 emulator for the Univac 90/30 so I could play it. I managed to emulate the machine instructions (and was highly impressed with the elegance of the architecture), but the supervisor calls stumped me. Later I got hold of FORTRAN source code for both Adventure and Dungeon, and ported them to the 90/30, which is how I first completed both games. (I did have to cheat and read the source code to figure out that last point in Adventure, though.) -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. There's no other way to obtain the point, unless someone tells you
how to get it.

No. Some of us are smart enough to figure it out for ourselves. You just
have to die enough times doing stupid things, and keep on doing stupid things,
to get that point.

Not sure how "keeping on doing stupid things" (presumably for months) can
be described as "smart". Still, you keep right on believing that, I'm sure
it's very reassuring to you.

We had two nearly identical machines side by side, and one of them had a problem that normal testing wouldn't reveal. So the CEs swapped half the circuit boards between the machines to see whether the problem moved. They were able to do a binary search down to the failing board. -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. The original version was the 350-point version that was released in 1977 by Don Woods. Later Woods did a 430-point version himself. (The Willie Crowther version from 1976 was *not* what one would call Adventure... it lacked most of the fantasy elements.) Wrong, John. The 500 point version was an extension of the 351 point FORTRAN
version, done by Dave Long of the University of Chicago Graduate School of
Business computer facility. (I knew Dave.) Dave is the person responsible for
changing a perfectly appropriate Balrog into a fucking Wumpus.
Any port to C came much much later.

So while my _main_ point was right - the 500 point version wasn't the "full" version of the original Adventure, but something tacked on to the real 350 point Adventure by a third party - I was wrong in thinking that happened together with the conversion to C. As for a Wumpus instead of a Balrog, I suppose that was because Gregory Yob could afford fewer lawyers than the Tolkien estate. Of course, I once owned the pocket "Dungeons & Dragons" game that was essentially a version of Hunt the Wumpus... played on a 10 by 10 grid. Which was ironic, if you read the original Creative Computing article in which Hunt the Wumpus was described - he invented the game, with the Wumpus on the vertices of a dodecahedron, to get away from the 10 by 10 grid used by so many BASIC games of the era.
