So? "high school children" != "intending computer scientists".

If the PI only teaches em how to set up apache and build a simple web
site, its thoroughly useful.

If the Pi gets some of them started on a path of learning about
something that fascinates them it will have done good. I see plenty of
evidence that this has happened.

My computer career was jump-started in high school.
I learned many languages (BASIC, Fortran, PL/1, BAL)
on several systems (PDP8/e EDU-25 BASIC, JCL for IBM 360/370)
and dabbled with others (such as the LGP-21 in the storage room).
Code and skill portability is still a virtue!

It think it's wonderful for folks to learn
that there's more to computers that Windows on Intel processors.

When I was in high school, none of us had access to a computer
where interfacing was encouraged!

Agreed. Ancient history, while useful for context, has no place in
modern teaching.

By the way, all, the OP "gareth" is actually Gareth Alun Evans, of
Chippenham, Wiltshire, a notorious troll and convicted criminal who has
reduced several previously useful newsgroups, including
uk.radio.amateur, to rubble.

You may wish to decide whether it's worth replying to him. Trolls are
best ignored, then they wither on the vine and die or go hunting for
pastures new. By replying to them, you only feed their need for
attention.

You may wish to review tomlinson's posts to the NG uk.radio.amateur over
recent months
to determine which of the two of us is the real problem personality
who is ruining this NG, and by stalking me, other NGs

I speak up for the twin technical and gentlemanly traditions of amateur
radio and try to foment technical discussion by originating
suitable threads.

What has tomlinson done other than to turn this NG into the
very cesspit against which he rails?

There are actually three of them, reay, cole and tomlinson,
The Three Amigos, in fact, who egg each other on and feed each other
in their abusive frenzies.

TBH I really don't. You've spawned some interesting discussions,
but there is also this coterie with whom you interchange assorted insults
and complaints. I don't care who is to blame, I like the technical
discussion you've stimulated (despite not agreeing with you) but I don't
like the bitching. It would be nice if you all stopped and just ignored
each other.

Amen! But that is never going to happen. Gareth has done some things
that could have done permanent harm to one of the posters but instead
got a formal rebuke from the court. He seems to stop shy of that now,
but just. The others give him no credit (deserved or not) and pounce on
him every chance they get.

I stand by what I did because a mature student under training at an all
girls'
grammar school should not be there under any circumstances when in the
evenings he is posting offensive pornographic posts that I was partaking

I never do such things but in the interest of decency and civility I reserve
the
right to reply defensively to those whose behaviour is so revolting and
immature.

They stalk me everywhere but never of themselves contribute anything
relevant to any of the threads.

All it takes for the thugs and vandals to win the day is for decent people
to remain silent.

PS; you will also see that I do not reply to them directly because they are

And Intel Edison and Galileo modules <G> (Running Linux variants
though).

Though does anyone still teach "much lower level"? Many modern
processors are so convoluted that naive linear assembly could be slower
than some out-of-order instruction sequencing. So-Called RISC instruction
sets that have more addressing options to keep track of than a reasonable
CISC architecture.

"Much lower level" feels like something one would find in an advanced
theory class on writing optimizing assemblers and peep-hole optimizers.

It's nothing new, optimising compilers have been rearranging the
order of execution for decades now, and pipeline processors have been
reordering the submission of instructions to the execution hardware for a
long time too - the PowerPC has an instruction with the wonderful mnemonic
EIEIO, Enforce In order Execution of IO which can be used to prevent the
CPU overlapping or reordering instructions in hardware drivers where the
order matters for reasons the CPU cannot determine.

Quite so. Those reading "gareth"'s advice would be well advised that
his experience stems from the era of valve-powered equipment and is in
no way applicable to modern processors, although he seems unable to
recognise this.

Au contraire, sounds like introduced performance.
