The C64 used the PET cassette, a pretty different contruction from the Kansas City format. You could interface KC cassettes, but then you attached them to the SIO pins of the 6522, not to the "native" cassette interface. It has a special edge connector with 6 pins. The kits for interfacing audio to the C64 cassette port had one of those, a regulating IC (ISTR it was a 2x op-amp chip) and a few passive components plus a board, around 5x4 cm. Plus some phono plugs; around $12. Took around an hour to solder them for an inexperienced youth. They were pushed by lots of the corner electronics shops at the time. (Remeber those? We only had intependendents, not Radio Shack or any of the UK/German ones). -- mrr

My favorite one in Cambridge, which was well established when I first went in to buy a few components in the early 70s, is still going with the same proprieter - H Gee of Mill Road (although the proprieter is Philip Gee so I'm not sure where the H came from). As I recall, there were fast loader programs, but I do not know
how they worked. I do not know if they worked on standard program
tapes or had a special format.

The PET,Vic and C64 had room for two cassette buffers in the Bios. The second one was a very popular place to have this driver loaded, since a second tape was rather rare on the Vic and C64. (but possible). The "fast cassettes" usually had an initial loader that had several parts. Every standard tape (and disk) load had a starting address in memory; and there was no check if it overwrote the 0-1023 memory locations reserved for the bios and basic. So they started with a little driver loaded at the end of the stack (~location 450 or thereabouts) plus some overwrite of the execution pointers for the basic so it started a 1-line basic program containing a syscall to invoke a second (slow) load of the fast driver into the 2nd cassette buffer, and transfer control there. Then that did the fast load. Instead of 300 baud they usually loaded at 2400 with some ingenious, very dense compression. They also had multiple load addresses, one for each block, so they could load all over memory. This whole preamble plus loader was around 200 bytes in total, and took around 9 seconds to load at 300 baud. Then the real game could be loaded, if it filled memory (64k, where 56 was directly accessible) it would normally load in a minute or five. Which was very fast compared to a 300 baud load, which would take the better part of an hour. -- mrr who worked with far more of this than I care to remember.

I made one in the school metalwork shop (they allowed us to do small projects after ours some days). I used a really tiny croc-clip and soldered in some pieces of thin square copper section. The metalwork master gave me a nudge in the right direction - put a thin bit of paper between the copper bits, then solder both with the clip closed. Odd the way some things bring memories flooding back :) I haven't got any red-spots left but do still have a handfull of OC45s and 71s -- W J G

If just two of them are any good it is worth the cost. From the "count left" I see that they are selling around 500/day. And this is the "showcase offering". They are one of around 100 different hardware vendors. If you don't like the pi because of the Linux, there are other OSes for it. Or you could try the Arduino. THAT is programming close to the metal. And they sell like wild. This must be at least 10 times bigger than the 60s/70s hobbyist electronics scene, and it is just starting. -- mrr

Would you really expect somebody to program a Cray using the front panel and think less of them if they fed it a card deck with Fortran code?
