They are for code generators, including one on the back of the assembler, to handle. They are alternate encodings. The full instructions are always there. But you can save a _lot_ by using them. Without them the ARM7 code is around 25-35% bigger than the same program compiled for x86. With them the code size goes down to 32-40% of the x86. A three to four fold saving. It relieves cache pressure a lot too. -- mrr

Using all 32 - or all 64 - bits of an address in every instruction is wasteful! The System/360 was designed to have the same instruction set over a wide performance range. So the base-displacement system of addressing was used so that programs running on the smaller machines wouldn't have giant addresses in every instruction that they never used. However, I agree that 12 bits is restrictive; 16 bits, as offered by the 680x0, is more reasonable. John Savard

But the 68000/68020 architecture had one flaw: base-index addressing with a 16-bit displacement required a 48-bit instruction instead of a 32-bit one. Being used to the System/360, I saw that as wasteful and unnecessary. Why? What possible profit would it be to Freescale, who specialize in embedded controllers for which the profit margin is as close to zero as it is possible to be? How, exactly, is 680x0 architecturally better than any of the modern RISC processors? Ease of programming in assembly doesn't count, since nobody does that anymore.

It's true that because of the lengthy hiatus, there is not a huge amount of Amiga, Atari ST, or classic Mac software which leads to an effective market demand for machines to run it on. I'm not going to try to say that the 680x0 is "better" than, say, a Power PC. However, modern RISC processors are not the only game in town. I think I could say that the 680x0 is architecturally better *than the x86*. The question of whether it could happen, whether it would be profitable to Freescale... can be put aside. I can still say, quite freely: I wish someone would make 680x0 processors today using current technology (that is, not just continuing to source past 680x0 chips, up to the 68060, but to make chips that would go head-to-head in performance with the latest Skylakes)... and I wish that they would make a profit at doing this... because... those chips power a popular series of personal computers using an operating system provided by some other company instead of Microsoft, and, unlike the Macintosh, are successful enough to have a strong presence in the market, with a wide selection of software available at prices competitive with Windows software. Say 40% market share at least. Hoping for that - feeling that it would be nice if that were the case, that it would be superior to the present arrangement of things - is in no way irrational. Believing that there is any chance in real life that it could happen... now *that* would be stark raving lunacy, but that is not the issue at hand. But perhaps some clarity is needed. Perhaps to phrase it this way: I wish somebody would make new 680x0 chips, but not just so they could lose lots of money and fall flat on their face; I wish a lot of other things would happen too, so that they could usefully get away with doing so. Currently it is used in peripherals. X86 is used in desk top machines. The ARM in mobile computers and phones. Do any of the internet of things applications need major computing power? By adding ram, rom, FPGA, digital to analogue converters, analogue to digital, mini display controllers or graphics processor etc can a widely used device control chip be sold? In the name of diversity Intel appears to be firing its best people and replacing them with the wrong people. This may lead to weaknesses that Freescale can take advantage of. it could even market its own games console.

If IBM's S/360 designers had today's hardware to work with, I'm sure they'd come up with something entirely different than what we have today. Further, I think they would've been shocked to learn that S/360 is still around fifty years later. Heck, it didn't take long for IBM to attempt to replace it with Future System, though that was disaster. (And I dare say, if it wasn't for Y2K, we probably still have some 1401 systems still in service.)

Likewise. Most of the time, in my neck of the woods anyway, one
does not need the speed anyway. My gut feeling is that many
programmers are fooling themselves as to how much the speed is needed.
Save the effort for when it is really needed.
My code tends to evolve as business needs change. I might well
have to undo an overly-ambitious optimisation anyway.
