Yes, there would _be_ a minicomputer business prior to there being a microcomputer business, as electronic logic circuits improved and became more compact. However, what DEC did was establish the minicomputer as a product category. They didn't invent the integrated circuit. So while minicomputers are a prerequisite for microcomputers, it isn't DECs contributions to the minicomputer that were essential to the microcomputer; the microcomputer would still have come about even if the mini era was shorter because some other firm, like Honeywell or Hewlett-Packard, eventually got around to coming up with the microcomputer on its own. > DEC neither invented nor perfected timesharing. For one thing, when it first came out, it was basically a hobbyist toy, with very limited capability and very expensive. But the PC industry persevered and came out with more powerful machines and good applications to support it. Getting IBM's blessing helped a lot, too.

Those "amateurs" are often experts at some field other than programming who became frustrated at the inability of the IT department to deliver code that did what they needed when they needed it. How does the cloud address this? The cloud still depends on somebody writing the code to do whatever is needed and if the in-house IT department isn't adequately responsive why would a third-party IT department do any better?

In addition to data and applications stored remotely the user's desktop should be elsewehere. The ideal is that you should be able to walk into an office with shared PCs, sit down at any of them, and instantly have "your" system available. I haven't kept up, so I don't know how closely current systems correspond to this model. The PC would function similar to a Xterm. -- Pete

I was postulating that all three stepped up to an unoccupied machine at the same time. I guess it could ask which of them wanted to establish a session. I can think of situations where I wouldn't want my phone calls etc. to follow me around the building.

Well, Windows roaming profiles are a close approach, and they work (FSVO 'work'). We have Windows machines in the house (for work reasons; we use FreeBSD as our system of choice).
