Inspired by the PL/I thread, I've had a look at BLISS for the first time.

Interesting the dot notation to cause a variable name dereference in sharp
contrast to the C technique of using "&" to force a reference!

I wonder how many bugs came about in BLISS programs because of
the unnatural need to use dot compared to other languages?

The C technique dates back to at least as early as 1964 or so. It was 
present in BCPL, although that used @ rather than &.

You're looking at it as a C programmer.  A BLISS programmer would probably
say the '&' is unnatural.

Not at all. I look at it as a programmer with experience in FORTRAN, many
assemblers, CORAL, RTL/2, PASCAL, PLM51, PLM86, BASIC in its
many manifestations. and C, amongst others.

There are people who loved BLISS and used it well.  My realtionship with
the language always created a PITA and I didn't write a line a code.
The New BLISS was worse than BLISS-10; there was no such thing as
a clean build.

I would suppose that since "eludom" looks like gibberish, the allusion to 
Klaatu was intended to poke gentle fun at the use of such strange-looking words 
in Bliss. Of course, it wasn't only BLISS that did this - as the ESAC of Algol 
68 makes clear.

Although with Algol 68 you could avoid using CASE...ESAC by using (...) 
instead, although rather less readable!

Burroughs did this with a couple of languages, including the systems
programming language SPRITE that was used for the MCP.
