Oh, I know. I used their predecessors. But nothing had been improved!

The problem with ICL was that, being the result of multiple mergers,
there were far too many mediocre middle managers. Too many chiefs and not
enough Indians.

I remember trying to get programming information for a 2900 OCP out of
them. It wasn't conspiracy, just cock-up - they couldn't find it, or
someone who knew how to find it.

I ended up reverse engineering the microcode.

And that was before the era of "downsizing", when many companies, all at once, started firing large proportions of their middle managers.

nah, middle managers didn't "lose" the sources. I'd bet that one of
mergers laid off the keepers of the bits.

I thought that, but the mergers all happened before the machine
architecture was defined.

To me, microcode was all mystical magic smoke. How did you
reverse engineer it? Note that the microcode most familiar
to me is the KL microcode. Was yours simpler?

No, it was bloody complicated (to me anyway). 60 bits wide, with up top
four microinstructions running in parallel, at different parts of their
execution. For example, you executed a jump and then had time to do three
more instructions before it took effect.

I had to hand assemble some of it for a different problem. The reverse
engineering was a matter of reading the source 9and comments) and working
out what it did.

and look for 'Hacking the hardware' and 'Dual? what dual?'.

OH!!! You had sources. I had interpreted your reverse engineering
comment to imply that you started with the executable and then
wrote your own sources.

I remember looking once at KL microcode sources; my eyes immediately
crossed.

Mine did much the same. They weren't easy. To hand-assemble my patches, I
had to find similar instructions, look at the listing and work out what
bit pattern to change.

Did you make a physical template so you could read it?

Probably, but I can't remember. I do still have the patch somewhere...and
the program I wrote to apply it.

I've heard that ICL is pronounced "I see hell!"

1900 was when the hardware was designed; 2900 is when the software
will be ready?

The software was never ready. But then we didn't use ICL software at all
on our 2900.

I know nowt about the 2900.

The 1900 was part of the second year course on computer design, ISTR
its architecture described in some detail in the book by F.G.Heath.

I used one. And wrote some assembler for it - for money!
