Certainly, you could write an assembler in COBOL. Also, do lots of other things. But would the resultant code be efficient? Probably not. Properly written assembler code is usually more efficient than higher level code. For instance, a very simple COBOL program to copy a file won't run as fast as a utility (e.g. IEBGENER or SYNCSORT-copy) because the utility writers have access to more machine level features. Further, something like an assembler or utility program is rolled out to many thousands of users of the machine. As such, it pays to be written for efficiency. In contrast, an application program might run an hour once a day (or even less). Maintainability is more important than speed. In essence, the customer world has generally followed, for good reason, of: --COBOL for business applications --assembler for systems programming and specialized work --FORTRAN for scientific applications

It would depend on the compiler writer. I think you made the same mistake I made -- he's not talking about the quality of the code produced by the assembler, but the "quality" of the code that is the assembler itself. (NB that they're discussing an assembler, not a compiler, and there is no "code generator" apart from the programmers brain.) > COBOL has plenty of useful features for assemblers. I see no reason why > it should run any slower than code written in another language. This comes down to the same argument that has been going on in This Very Froup for a quarter-century: "Is the code produced by a compiler as good as some hand-crafted assembler", and the answer is *nearly always*: "No. Compiler generated code is far better." First - the metric "better" is ill-defined at best. For me, as a manager, it has become: "Produces code that is adequate to meet the requirements, in calendar-time that meets the budget". Even if we change to a sillier metric of "is the most efficient use of hardware resources" (which I posit have been cheaper than programmer resources since about 1972, and are getting cheaper by multiple orders of magnitude every decade) the answer is almost always "No -- The compiler is still far better, *for a programmer within one standard-deviation of the mean*" It is only because every programmer here believes himself to be the freak outlier (and always on the right hand side of the curve) that the argument even continues. Even for a self-selected population of "old timer geeks", the odds of all of us being as great as we imagine ourselves to be is infinitesimal.

Me too. I cannot have more than about 10 items in my head, like register allocations, open loops, function arguments etc, at any one time. So I try to make up for it. With cheat sheets (which look positively bewildering to anyone outside, including myself two months later), as well as using all the tools I can. I find perl taxing to this ability. And APL. I therefore don't use them. I don't like assembly, for the same reason, even if I have written commercial code in around 6 of them, and dabbled in another dozen or so. I positively hate x86 code. I am still having the jury out for the ARM/Thumb2 stuff. (Very neat, but unneccesary complicated for humans). I like pl/1, it takes care of a lot of those mudane mechanics that you have to think of in C all the time, without getting any more in the way of doing things. (Like strings, overflows, error handling etc). It also does almost all the stuff COBOL is good at in a much more agreeable way. (Pictures, conversions, databases/indexed files etc) I also like python, except for that silly indentation stuff. So, being very aware of my limitations should make up for something, right? -- mrr

In fact, much worse. I don't know why compilers fall short in this area. Perhaps they just fail to understand what the code is doing. I see generated code load and re-load the same base register over and over a few instructions apart. The compilers seems to have one or 2 registers they want to use and just ignore other UNUSED registers. I've never seen a compiler use one of my favorite tricks, when you call a subroutine that only uses 2 or 3 registers, there is no reason to save any registers other than the ones used. As far as remembering which registers are in use, that's what scrolling is for. -- Dan Espen

I just write code quite slowly, try and make it as clear as possible
what I'm doing and quite often have more comments than code.

OTOH, I quite like perl. I've probably written more perl than anything
else.

Never used it.

I haven't written any assembler since my PDP11 days, although I did
go on a 'phone hacking course recently which used ARM assembler (cue
a lot of baffled looks from other people on the course who'd never
even heard of assembler before).

From what I've seen of it, I think I agree with you.

Hmmmm. As soon as I tripped over the mixture of functions and OO stuff, I
started to feel nauseous.

I like that.

Any program that gets the job done and that's finished when it's supposed
to be is a good one.

Me too. I've seen to much tricky write-only code. I'd rather be less efficient and have something I can go back and fix later. If I do write something difficult to comprehend I try to write long comments describing wht it's doing, why it's doing it, and how it's supposed to work. > >> I find perl taxing to this ability. > > OTOH, I quite like perl. I prefer the architecture where you have: - one accumulator - one index register - a stack frame pointer - a stack frone pointer - a spare base register or two - a descriptor register Very nice to program, and write compilers for. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... My own personal aesthetic preference is for architectures like the Motorola 680x0 and the System/360, but I realize that today we need RISC architectures to avoid having to use register renaming to cope with today's deep pipelines.
