With a choice of Linux or one of the BSDs and plenty of excellent software with any of them, I'm just thrilled with the things I can do with a computer. I suspect that I too will be moving to several small computers running ARM or perhaps Atom CPUs. They're powerful enough to work in most cases as a general-purpose computer, plus they're small enough and inexpensive enough that I can dedicate them to specialized uses if I want to.

HAL Computer Systems https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_Computer_Systems Was head of workstation IBU (pc/rt & rs/6000) but had some unflattering words to say to IBM senior VP about being directed to not develope our own adapter cards ... but forced to use PS2 cards. Folklore is that eventually led to his departure from IBM .... and later forming HAL. HAL started out being H&L ... for the two founders. "L" was employed at a major silicon valley company and when the H&L plans became known, he was threatened with legal action and dropped out of the effort. I've told story about the PS2 16mbit T/R microchannel card (that RS/6000 was directed to use) had lower per card throughput that the customer 4mbit T/R PC/AT bus card done for the PC/RT. That should be fairly long lasting, considering I do okay with a 3GHz single core and 2gigs of ram right now. But buying refurbished, as I said elsewhere, means getting more space for expansion, and hopefully a serial and parallel port, things that are getting dropped as computers shrink to smaller packages.
