Because some politician had signed some scrap of paper they were turned over to the Russians and (of course) never heard from again. I remember a sequence about that in the World at War series. The unit commander the documenter talked to said he had no choice. If he didn't, someone else would. From what I have read, Stalin was concernced they would be 'contaminated by Western ideas', or Stalin just liked to kill people. -- JimP.

This is a dim memory, but I think that the winning horse in the 1948
Grand National was called "Russian Hero".. He would have been born,
and named, several years earlier. (For explanations, USAians cann

No, that "simplistic" view - except for referring to properly democratically- elected governments as gangs of criminals - is precisely correct. Thus, just as one can through scientific study determine that Negroes are full human beings, and from that draw the conclusion that Negro slavery was wrong, similarly, scientific study of embryology can tell us whether, or when, abortion is the moral equivalent of infanticide - and we are *compelled* to prohibit it, regardless of public opinion in the matter, just as the Holocaust would still have been wrong even if the majority of Germans had enthusiastically supported it. Unfortunately, many people simply cannot grasp that their views on morality are shaped by the influence of the pervasive culture and that if they had spent their formative years in a different culture they might hold very, very different views on those matters.

Absolutely. Heck, cultures evolve among themselves over time. Our societal mores, boundaries, and expectations were distinctly different say 50 years ago. For instance, lots of things teachers and parents did to kids were thought of good back then, but today would result in getting arrested. Disney had a popular film in the early 1960s, The Parent Trap. Then it was remade. Watching and comparing the two versions shows very distinct differences in styles of parenting of the two eras. I often wonder what office life would be like in, say, back in 1960 for a programmer or procedures analyst; that is, in terms of the atmosphere. Obviously, it was much more favored toward men and whites, many women or blacks simply would not get hired in a professional position in a corporation in 1960. I'm pretty sure one was expected to wear a jacket much of the time, even if the office wasn't air conditioned (and many weren't in 1960).

But in reading company newsletters and thinking back to the general culture (e.g. TV, movies), I suspect the U.S. actually went through a big change in attitude between 1960 and 1964. I remember seeing newsletters of 1964 pointing out women engineers being hired, or including a black face among the professional staff. It may have been as you said--companies needed people, so were willing to open up (just as they did in WW II). I remember around that time we got black teachers in an otherwise all white school, and some black reporters on the news stations. On the other hand, I'm sure plenty of companies were not about to hire women or blacks in many jobs (and vice versa, too--no men secretaries or switchboard operators).

In 1960, almost any 'white collar' worker, even junior clerks, wore a necktie and probably a jacket, too. Indeed, people wore a necktie to go to a baseball game or out visiting friends. Well into the 1970s, older people continued that tradition. Companies employed a great many clerks, both men and women, back in 1960 (note the film "The Apartment", just on TCM). They all wore ties or dresses. Even some blue collar uniformed employees wore a necktie or bowtie, such as railroad conductors, bus drivers, and milkmen. Store men like butchers still wore a tie under their apron. As to computer operators, in some places they wore ties, in some places they did not. Almost all programmers wore ties, except perhaps on a college campus. In 1960, there was less automation, and many clerical tasks on the factory floor. Many of those positions on the floor were held by men, and they wore the worker's shop uniform, not a tie. Some of the operator jobs were just working levers on a machine, but they were still considered blue collar. Railroad locomotive engineers, who had little interaction with the public, normally did not wear ties. However, when the Penn Central introduced Metroliner deluxe service, its enginemen did wear a tie and jacket.

I attended a World Science Fiction Convention in the early 1990s. They have a museum that travels with it about the early days of the convention. Up into the 1960s the convention goers wore suit and tie for them men and nice semi-formal dresses for the ladies. I wore a beach shirt to the one in the 1990s. I noticed a bunch of folks not wearing suits, ties, dresses, etc. to that one. I saw beach shirts, t-shirts with various logos or pictures on them, shorts, sandels, sneakers, but nothing approaching formal wear. -- JimP.
