Aside from being a huge waste of money we didn't have, they also created a bad false sense of entitlement, unrealistic expectations, and dependency on external organizations.

The U.S. recognized that Japan intended to do the same thing in WW II, thus decided to deploy the atomic bomb. It's strange how critics of the bomb say Japan was "beaten", but the fact is that the Japanese didn't see it that way at all. No. Unlike the North Vietnamese, the U.S. was no longer willing to expended lives and treasure for the cause. Nixon recognized this. Heck, LBJ recognized this and chose to not run for re-election. Further complicating the mess was the fear that if the US escalated the fighting, e.g. bombing harbors or the critical dikes, that either the Soviets and/or China would enter the war directly, leading up to WW III. In addition, another complication was the lack of stable and functional government of South Vietnam.

War is not a game in which victory is established by who produces the most corpses. Victory is established by who destroys whose ability to wage war. The ability of North Vietnam to wage war against the US in the South was substantially destroyed when the US pulled out. China didn't have the capability for WWIII, they had at the time the capability to get nuked into the stone age. Yes, the had some bombs but they didn't have a delivery system other than praying that the US Navy didn't sink whatever rowboat they were using to carry a bomb across the Pacific. However North Vietnam was a Soviet client, not a Chinese client. Perhaps the Soviets would have started throwing nuclear weapons around if North Vietnam had been properly conquered, perhaps not. The Russians, who had been neutral toward Japan, were Japan's great hope for a negotiated peace--when the Russians broke neutraility they knew the end was at hand.

Japan in fact realised that it was just the Russians getting in on the act of defeating Japan and that they had no real capacity to do that with the main Japanese islands. They were however a problem for the Japanese army in China.

It wasn't mentioned in my high school history class. It was mentioned in a documentary about WW2 done some decades later. One POW camp commander stated he was indeed ordered to kill the Allied prisoners so they couldn't be rescued. And he spoke in English. So no translator screw up.

First off, the US maintained a hands off policy against key North targets to avoid escalating the war or create more domestic protests. Nixon tried to interdict materiel shipments and got hammered domestically for doing so. These policies allowed North Vietnam to maintain considerable fighting advantage. They may have also prevented WW III or a social revolution in the U.S. North Vietnam made excellent use of guerilla warfare, which doesn't take many resources, but was quite effective. Not helping the war was gross U.S. incompetence in both the political and military situations. It doesn't take much ability to wage war. Japan was fully prepared to have women and children charge American troops with bamboo spikes. The _will_ to make war is important. That determines whether a country has its factories make bullets, conscript children into the military, and put its civilians on very limited food rations. Different countries will have difference tolerance levels of the body count. Permission of the President and Secretary of War were required first and obtained, after discussion.

And we had just been treated to the Domino Theory propaganda. My attitude had always been if Capitalism is so great, why worry about competition using an inferior system.
