Imagine you were charged with murder. You spend a couple years in prison awaiting trial, and they eventually give you a plea bargain for manslaughter with ten years. You're eligible for parole after three, and you already have credit for four due to good behavior, so you go straight from court back on the street. OTOH, for a nonviolent drug offense, you'd get no good behavior credit or parole due to mandatory minimum laws, so you'd still have another 8 years to go. It was a problem in the US, too, at war's end, since technically the POW's couldn't be used as laborers at war's end, but the US desperately needed the labor since all the soldiers were still away and there was a big labor shortage. Unfortunately, such laws came about because many judges were far too lenient in sentencing repeat or violent offenders. Many "non violent drug offenders" weren't a low level street dealer (who are often just ignored, at least in the NE U.S.), but rather the leader of a major drug organization, and do deserve to be imprisoned. We had a case where a group of 19-20 y/o's planned and brutally murdered a teenaged boy. They got five years. There was a public outrage, and justifiably so.

True, not a good survival rate, but the prisoners from Stalingrad were in pretty sorry shape to begin with, malnourished, diseased, injured. Of the 3 million total, from 381K (Soviet number) to a million died, and the rest were ultimately repatriated.

Held after the end of the war, forced to work, and (I believe) not paid. It wasn't until 1950 (after the formation of the DDR) that most were back in Germany. The last was released in 1956 (I believe the ones held the longest were those who had been accused of war crimes).

Yes, it took quite a long time to get most of the POWs back to where they were legally entitled to be, but that is a separate matter entirely to whether they were ENSLAVED while they had not yet been returned. And they weren't just accused of war crimes, they had committed war crimes.
