I'm not thinking of driver obesity, I'm thinking of excessive junk on 
the roof rack, too much weight in the trunk, etc.

The various governments we have are also very guilty of nudging our
processed food towards a content of "very fast carbs", i.e. sugars and
starches, and this has supplanted vegs, fibers, proteins etc.

This has been done all through the value chain, and even though many
government agencies may feign innocence, the total amount of agricultural
subsidies, agricultural regulations, food pricing and regulation etc.
and the purchase regimes for foods (through food stamps etc) all
work towards this end.

So, yes, our governments are pretty much responsible for a lot of the
population's weight gain.

Remember, eat your fish and carrots, like your mom told you to!

I'm sure every food industry group wishes they could force
the outcome, but I see no reason to conclude that they
were successful.

Beef is good for you in limited quantities.
If you think the government is recommending too much beef,
point to your conflicting science.

When I was a kid, the dairy industry pushed its products very
hard.  They sponsored all sorts of displays and programs in 
schools.

In fairness, I don't know how much society knew about the risks
of saturated fat back then, which we used to consume much more
of.

Then again, many margarine products turned out to be just as
bad or even worse than butter with their trans-fats.

My dad's first job (in 1938) was to go out and take food
samples in shops and markets for the regulatory food agency.
He said that almost all of today's margarine would have been
confiscated and the sellers fined heavily. 

For storage, what they mix into it, and for the raw materials.
Nearly all of it.

When I was a kid my mother bought some stuff that looked like lard and had 
to mix in a little packet of yellow coloring before use.  AIUI, it was 
illegal in my state to sell yellow colored greasy stuff.

I have churned butter from cream and butter is not very yellow in its 
natural state. It might be yellow in the spring dandelion season, I don't 
know.  Churning butter without ice in July is not a fun thing to do.

It was illegal in Wisconsin due to lobbying efforts by the
Milkfat (butter) industry, not for any other reason such as
health or appearance.

The color of butter depends heavily on what the cows are eating.

Churning butter one time, and reading an article about using drums
for data storage, it suddenly struck me how similiar both were.
This was a churn with a gear at the bottom, which caused the churn to 
spin horizentally. (Why was I reading that article?.. Because there 
is nothing more boring than churning, and you don't think you are 
going to visit home and do nothing)

We used that too.  I think the fairy people didn't want it looking too much
like butter.  It was always my job to mix in the yellow stuff.

The mandated yellow coloring was a result of lobbying by the dairy
industry to protect butter sales.  Presumably, margarine was cheaper.

On the other hand the best of the producers now go
out of their way to minimise the trans fat content in
the margarine they sell. The margarine I eat has
less than 1g/100g of trans fat in it.

If you're talking about American margarine, he's correct because in 1938 
it was unlawful in many localities to dye the margarine yellow.  Those 
laws were repealed around 1955.

Unfortunately. It was the last barrier to margarine taking over the 
market over butter. The margarine was full of trans fats for decades.

Now what we are replacing trans fats with are probably worse than the
trans fats. And so it goes.

	Flavour is what keeps me using butter - that and distrust of the
margarine makers.
