IIRC, a large portion of those subsidies go to Archer-Daniels Midland and Cargill.

Of course it does for those whose entire income is welfare money.

The Bible, if not true history, is full of good advice, and you can
read of how Joseph stored up surplus corn from the good 7 years, to tide
Egypt over the bad 7 years. (There is archeological evidence that in
very bad years, large parts of the Egyptian populaation died.
Agriculture was always an US success, with a large part of the World
good land inside its borders. I have seen corn sown in the Middle
East on land that would be classified as desert in the US. Now, with
its industry dwindling, the US needs to sell more of its produce abroad.
The problem is that US farmers are allowed to use chemicals to increase
production, that other countries ban.

Whats this thing called TTIP?

An EU-US free trade agreement, negotiated in secret by governments and
corporate lobbyists. Among other things, it would let corporations sue
national governments (in a special tribunal) for actions (laws,
regulations) that interfere with profits. So presumably that would
override the EU restrictions on chemicals & GMOs. I'd expect the coal
companies to act against anyplace that might restrict burning of coal.
Here in the US we see results of similar treaties, we're not allowed
to label meat with country of origin because Canadian and Mexican
farmers fear it would affect their sales. We've lost a major chunk of
our manufacturing jobs under similar treaties.

"Free" trade agreements sound good until you look at the details.

That isnt going to happen with the EU and the US doesn’t export coal
to the EU anyway.

No.

Maybe not Canadian, I might prefer that, but I'm suspicious of Mexican
stuff, even produce labeled "organic".

Yes, we get cheaper flat-screen TVs, but we pay the price. Business raves
about how good these agreements are, but I'm not sure they're so good for
consumers.

Cheaper everything, actually.

I don’t believe that, even with employment.

The US has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the
entire modern first and second world of the majors.

Of course they are when they get much cheaper
everything and you are free to continue to buy the
much more expensive locally made stuff if you want to.

Yes. The ethanol scam is profitable to the point that the prices
of feed grains has become dear.

This practice has been going on at least since the Civil War. There's
a term for that kind of "farming".

The price of feed grains are at rock bottom, at the moment, Where they
would be without ethanol being made is a question. Good crops in Russia
and aceoss the rest of Eurasia account for this.

Precisely. And even with the most sophisticated systems where
it is possible to pay their rent for them, load some credit onto
the cards used to travel on public transport, pay the electricity
and home gas bills for the welfare recipient, their still needs
to be cash used for other stuff and they just spend that on
booze, cigarettes and illegal drugs.

You cannot spend it on any of those things. When you use your EDB
debit card, the cash register tells you how much you still owe if you
are buying items not on the US government list.

Um, is the Federal program where the EBT card replaced food stamps the _only_
welfare program in the United States? Don't municipalities or states also
provide poor relief in some cases?

After all, food stamps pay for _food_ - welfare recipients presumably also need
some assistance that pays for housing.

Nope.

And there is also the dole, what gets paid to those
who choose to stay home and look after the kids etc.

That doesn't necessarily have to be paid to the welfare recipient,
it can be paid directly to the landlord etc. But they still need cash
to pay for other stuff like electricity, gas, gasoline, car registration
etc.

I beleive there is. Like Section 8 Housing. Low rent apartments or
house duplexes. Jobs Corps for job training, etc.

section 8 provides a voucher to be given to the landlord, not cash.

Along with a lot of bureaucracy and skipped payments.

I've watched people get a cash advance after carding for groceries.
Then they use the cash to buy stuff not allowed. Has cash advances
been excluded from those cards?

Cash advance? Even debit cards don't work that way.

Yes, of course.

They do in most jurisdictions so you don’t need to ever use
an ATM again, just get what extra cash you need at the checkout
and all of ours allow you to get just cash and nothing else at the
self checkouts in the supermarkets etc. I haven't used an ATM in
decades now and only use the credit card very rarely because
there isnt enough cash in the account the debit card uses because
I keep most of my cash in a high interest paying account.

The current best debit card allows me to pay for anything
and get cash at the checkouts in supermarkets and has an
automatic sweep from that account to the high interest
account with the same bank, where most of my cash is
kept, with no credit card from that bank at all, just the
debit card. It’s a Visa debit card that works just like a
Visa credit card world wide with the same security
when lost or stolen as you get with a credit card.

>> Then they use the cash to buy stuff not allowed.
>> Has cash advances been excluded from those cards?

> Yes, of course.

There has to be some way to get some of your welfare
in cash so you can pay for your non food purchases that
anyone needs to do, electricity, gas, gasoline, fares etc.
