In more populated places, this does exist (independently from welfare/food stamps, though sometimes using similar income guidelines). Food shelves are one example. It depends on the venue just what's included, whether the site has refrigeration is a factor. Within a mile or so of where I live there are several weekly food shelves, a program called "Nutritional Aid for Seniors" (income/age qualified) that gives a monthly carton of staples (canned/dry/bottled juice/cereal/dry or brickpack milk) and a block of commodity cheese (think Brand X Velveeta). A biweekly vegetable distribution (luck of the draw, whatever turned up when wholesalers looked in the warehouse and said "that's gonna go bad before we can sell it"). Several places that serve regular meals (one is a training program for food-service workers, others are at churches or community centers), most to anyone who shows up. The further you get away from the inner city, the sparser it becomes, though.

It is much more about how the fast food industry works and how much easier it is to use that than to eat properly and the fact that so many can't actually do any better than shove stuff in the microwave.

There is __so__ much wrong with your statement that it's not worth rebutting. You can start by actually talking with some folks who collect welfare and work two jobs and still can't find a place they can afford to rent instead of parroting Rush Limbaugh & ilk. You may also want to actually read up on the welfare reform in the 1990's which ensured that welfare wasn't a "long-term income stream". I'm not saying that it is not abused, just that that abuse is a miniscule percentage, and the vast majority of recipients would be perfectly happy to have a well-paying job such that they didn't need to deal with the demeaning welfare system.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help after a hurricane or earthquake. Nothing at all. They can be so devastating that the local and state authories cannot deal with it. And while volunteers do show up, they cannot handle such a huge work load either.

Strict Libertarians (with a capital L) are in fact opposed to government funded highways. As a libertarian I think that stand is a mistake since it does not increase their chances of winning much of anything. I hadn't heard that Libertarians do not take trains at the expected rate, I'm kind of puzzled as to why that is. I believe that libertarians are the least hypocritical life form you will find on this planet. Did you ever see Ron Paul (the dad, from Texas) be interviewed? He actually answers the questions he is asked, very refreshing and almost unheard of for a politician.

Some communities here had enormous problems after Sandy getting any help from the government. I think they still haven't been completely rebuilt. Mississippi and Louisiana are still recovering from Katrina, in 2005. It can take decades for an area to fully recover.

The only problem is you have to watch what people are getting, the natural tendency is to ask for everything and hope you get some of it. If you don't monitor this stuff some people and localities get a lot of stuff and others not so much. -- Pete

Unlike farm subsidies, where some farmers live on the dole forever. Over the last 20 years, farmers in Michigan alone sucked $2.5 billion in corn subsidies. That's in a single state that's "middle of the pack" (22/50), for one crop (it's about twice that much if you count all crops). 41% of the farms (59% received no subsidies). It's not that they don't know how to work, it's that (also) holding their hand out is so much more profitable. (That's of course assuming that all those "farms" are actually engaged in farming, not just harvesting govt money. One does see stories from time to time about successful people who obviously aren't farmers receiving big govt ag checks.)
