He was using a screwdriver as a shim to maintain separation. The screwdriver slipped and the plutonium went critical. Slotin yanked the beryllium back off, but died of radiation injuries a week later. Coincidentally, it was the very same bomb core that had killed another physicist, Harry Daghlian, in a similar accident the previous year. Daghlian was building a fence around it with tungsten carbide bricks (another neutron reflector) and fumbled a brick. He pulled the bricks apart, but died of radiation injuries a few weeks later. After Slotin's death, they got serious about using manipulators and remote control. The bomb core was used in a bomb test a couple of months after the accident.

I think they were smart enough not to hold radioactive materials in their bare hands. Indeed, I'd have to check, but even the screwdriver experiments were not allowed, but scientists did them anyway. The scientists felt the tremendous urgency to get the bomb finished as they feared Germany was working on one, plus our boys were dying in battle, and thus cut corners on even the minimal safety standards of their era. Sadly, one fatal accident occurred _after_ the war was over and their was no need to get risky.

Odd that a religion, Christianity, where the founder, Jesus, says to love one another, and yet... many Christians speak hateful words. Yes, I'm a Christian, but hate-speach isn't what I do.

I think every religion demonizes non-believers to some extent. Historically, I think all religions engaged in war done in the name of the religion. There was a film, Lady Jane Grey, showing the conflict within the British royal family between choosing being Catholic or Protestant. Lots of executions. I am glad Obama has been smart enough to avoid too much intervention in the civil war in Syria, despite hawk calls from many Republicans. That's a sectarian battle we must avoid. Unfortunately, the U.S. utterly failed to understand the Sunni/Shite conflict in Iraq.

Queen Mary wanted the pope in charge, Elizabeth really wanted a return to Henry's idea. AN echo of the problem persists, when the Pope's Church dodged the prosecution of priestly childmolesters, thinking that they were following Church (Canon) Law. Very recently, an elderly Cardinal advised bishops that canon law covered that crime. The pope had awarded the title of "Defender of the faith" to Henry for his defence of Catholicism, and that title was stamped on British coins until fairly recently) -- greymaus . . ...
