I think it's more about control of behaviour of people who don't
appear to belong to the norm. I get a rash of shit from some
of my family w.r.t. religion but they think they have every
right to vocalize their biogry in my house. They seem to use
bigotry as general reasoning against anything they think
they don't like.

Good point. A lot of it is intolerance of deviation from "the norm",
with personal/local/tribal determination of norm. Of course that's not
entirely a conservative thing (it sorta fits the dictionary
definitions but not the economic ones), it may even be a human nature
or tribal thing. By that definition, China is conservative (sounds
right to me). It does seem to be endemic among US conservatives though.

Yes.

Not really with whether you are a god botherer or not.

> Of course that's not entirely a conservative thing

Not at all in fact given that the rabid left are just as bad in that
respect.

> (it sorta fits the dictionary definitions

Not really. That is much more about wanting to keep
doing things the way they have always been done.

> but not the economic ones), it may even be a human nature

In fact quite a bit of it is seen with animals too with the outliers
not fitting in with the group and getting harassed by the group.

> or tribal thing.

Yes with tribe in the loosest form, like with religious cults etc.

> By that definition, China is conservative (sounds right to me).

That's mad. In some ways they are much more into radical politics
that anyone else has been for a very long time now, most obviously
with the red brigades and chucking teachers from upper story windows
of the school etc. Can't think of any other major society that has ever
been as radical as that tho the French revolution did get close.

> It does seem to be endemic among US conservatives though.

Its endemic with the US rabid left too, but they are so politically
irrelevant that they don’t get noticed to anything like the same extent.

They're just the ones who are vocal about it. I've found that the left
has similar intolerances; the difference is that the left's solutions
are to invoke governmental rules and regulations to limit the behaviour
and punish with fees and penalties. For example, they are leery
of a female being self-sufficient and solve that problem by herding
people into being dependent on goverment income and "benefits".
Divorce is acceptable now because the responsibilities and
economies previously covered by marriage has now been transferred
to the Federal/State governements.

That isn't how the hippies operate and you can't get more left than that.

Even sillier than you usually manage.

Regarding the left and dependency on government, there are
two components to it. The rank and file see it has helping
the disadvantaged and starving children with the hope of becoming
eventually independent. They love to tell stories of homeless
kids graduating from college, thanks to govt aid.

However, the leadership does it as you describe--creating a
long term dependency, which in turn creates life time employment
for the social activists, and they want to keep that.

The labor movement faltered, in part, because many union leaders
liked the nice perks of their union job and wanted to keep them.
To do so, they invented new grievances against the employer in
order to create agitation and justify their existence.

Of course both views are correct, because both outcomes occur. The
thing is to consider the outcomes in both types of cases without the
support, is it better or worse ? In the first case the starving and
disadvantaged children who might have become independent contributing
adults die, in the second case I suppose some die and some work.

Net effect without support it seems you have a higher proportion of
the population working but the price is a higher proportion of the
population starving, and an increase in general disease levels. Probably
worth spending a bit to avoid that.

In the US, people aren't starving and they spend the welfare money
on big TVs, cigarettes, booze, etc. and don't learn how to work.
Welfare should be a temporary safety net and not a long-term
income stream.

For regular people, yes. However there are the 2-3% who are severely
handicapped. They will need support, ideally by adapting a workplace,
but in many cases this is not feasible, and they will need lifelong
support.

In the US people rarely starve, but they do get pretty malnourished
and many have very skewed diets. Much due to how the food support is
done.

Many comment on the bad diet of poor people. While some is undoubtedly due
to the lack of good grocery stores, some studies have shown that their
eating habits are actually a survival strategy. "Junk food", like potato
chips and soda provides the most calories per dollar, while good stuff,
like fresh vegetables, is relatively calorie-poor.

And that is a large part of the reason for the obesity epidemic
amongst poor people.

Compounded by the fact that poor people don’t grow
their own veg much at all anymore for various reasons.

Turn food stamps into a ration card. When they have taken vegetables
home they will probably eat them.

That is the last thing we need, a nanny state.

Not when they don’t know what to do with
them and are too stupid to even look that up.

Someone I know who is on what you call benefits
refused to eat any vegetables, just like a little kid.

Cooking programs are popular.
The growers and wholesalers of say peas can run adverts showing how to
boil peas.

Not amongst those whose entire income is welfare/benefits.

They are much more into booze and illegal drugs.

> The growers and wholesalers of say peas can run adverts showing how to

But the absolute vast bulk of peas are bought
frozen now and there are instructions on the
pack about how to do them in the microwave.

Yes, far more potatoes are sold fresh, and it
would be easy to have ads that tell you how
to microwave those, but it is very far from
clear how many of those whose entire income
is welfare/benefits would bother even if that
was all they could buy food wise with their
welfare/benefits money.

And it isnt viable to tell the most stupid of
those whose entire income is welfare/benefits
that if they don’t eat their veg, they will starve,
particularly with their kids.

Ehh, no. Check mcdonnels refuse bin. Check out any discount supermarket
where what looks like mothers pushing out trollies filled with horrid
snacks. The children are stuffed with advertising that goes like "When
uou pop, you cant stop.' There is a problem here, when children
whose familys thought they were middle-class, are put in emergency
accomodation, the children are afraid to go out to inner-city streets,
and sit aand watch junk TV, and eat junk food. You can do an awful lot
worse than mcdonnels

There is green stuff in McDonalds burgers. They may be able to develop a
meal that meets the ration card vegetable standard.

I suppose it wouldn't work logistically any more, but they used to give out
actual food instead of a card. Recipients got things like rice, cheese,
butter, milk, etc. I don't know what they did about vegetables, though.
This seems better since you can probably try to distribute the ingredients
of a balanced diet, and it's harder (though possible) to monetize it to buy
booze and cigarettes.

Separate program from Food Stamps, EBT debit cards, does give out
food. I believe its a separate paperwork process. Basically whatever
surplus foods the government has purchased to keep food prices stable.
Cheese, lots of starchy foods, canned goods.
