among the peoples of the fertile cresent. So, the creationists are nonsense

We got back Tuesday about 7:30 and, driving by a church near our place saw lines stretching around the block. At first we didn't make the connection to the election. If there's a popular incumbent, yes. Open seats often have several mainstream candidates, and vulnerable incumbents sometimes draw serious opposition as well. In recent years we've seen several long-term incumbents (especially among Republicans) bumped off by insurgents (though sometimes those winners are indeed fringe candidates). I think it's worse in caucus states, because the party apparatus has more control there.

Under the current system, smaller states go first precisely so they get "much love" despite having few delegates; the problem is most of those states are solid red or solid blue, so they don't directly affect the general election, but they tend to select more extreme candidates, so more moderate candidates tend to drop out before the larger, contested states get to vote. Marinaras, and Guam would go first, followed by VT, WY, AK, DC, ND, DE, SD, MT, RI, ME, NH, HI, ID, WV, NE, NM, KS, NV. No state in the deep south would be in the queue until the middle of the pack. The current order is stacked to favor the south. I'm not sure what defines "better" results, other than "candidates more to my liking". It would be more fair to the various states. The apparatchiks can't withstand a groundswell, but it's not for want of trying. And (in my state at least) caucuses don't actually determine the end result, they just elect delegates to conventions. It's at the conventions where the long knives come out, where stamina, knowledge of parliamentary tricks, and control of who counts the votes makes a difference. It is unlikely that the ultimate delegate count will reflect the vote distribution at the caucuses, even if we avoid thinking about "superdelegates"..

They argued about a lot of issues, like slavery and business; the miracle was that they reached compromises to get a Constitution developed and accepted by the ex-colonies. Let's remember that the Bill of Rights was not part of the original Constitution, but had to be added. The Warren Court and its immediate predecessor greatly expanded the protections of the 14th Amendment. Before 1945, women and minorities didn't have that many rights. The military was segregated before Truman ordered it opened up. Also, while some rights were granted by the Federal Government in dealing with certain Federal issues, these did not apply to the states; that came later. For instance, a train in _interstate_ service couldn't segregate, but trains within a state could, and perhaps had to. In addition, many civil rights were granted by statute, not court action, such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and then later the ADA.

The states couldn't agree on all of them, though, so the compromise was to put up each of the 12 (originally 17) articles as an amendment. No. The country was not founded on the principle of freezing in place the laws and customs of 1776, or being _selectively_ for certain government programs that happen to benefit mostly wealth people. The country was absolutely not founded on the principle of reneging on government contracts because you happen not to like--the fad of the year--because the the politicians happen not to like the contractual group (such as Chris Christie refusing to pay contractual pensions).

The political and financial state of France had been in an accelrating downward spiral for at least 30 years by then. It would probably have been a good idea to do so at least a decade sooner.
