We hear of many claims of ridiculous political correctness being imposed in education, but a deeper look at the vast majority of claims finds them to be unfounded. At best, it's a highly isolated instance. Often times, a liberal writer will call for some crazy things in an article (NYT and Phila Inqr guest editorials), but that represents only a suggestion, not an actual policy.

I choose not to vote, because the way my electorate works, we only ever elect other and the candidate from the one right of center party when the electorate happens to include a major city that does have a lot of left of center voters because it's a mining town that is one of the most unionised in the country. I don't bother to vote in the town election because there isnt much in it between the candidates and the town council only gets any say on stuff like whether they will charge to use the rubbish dump etc and even a mate of mine who did manage to get elected is too stupid to be able to work out that when they charge to dump stuff at the dump they will get lots of people dumping stuff elsewhere and that will cost a lot to collect and take to the dump. > In my day, as soon as we turned of age, we couldn't wait > to run out and register, and vote in the next election. I am not a member of U.S. society. (I am a Canadian.) If I try
to cross the border into the U.S.A., their customs people will most
definitely be asserting authority over me, a non-member.

That is a little naive. Britain has imposed poll taxes on people (entire tribes) with out jobs. They just had to be alive.

But all of those except the illegals and citizens from other EU countries are entitled to benefits so with those it is just handing them a wad of money and then taking some of that back in the poll tax. The illegals won't be paying it and the citizens from other EU countries are free to not pay the poll tax by leaving Britain.

I don't know who your imagined progressives are, but 99% of the democrats in congress are fully convinced that capitalism, despite some problems, is the best system for now. While conservatives tout the 'free market', in reality, there is no such thing. A true free market means the players know what is going on. But today's consumers have little knowledge. Modern companies have worked very hard to make things as confusing as possible, as compared to the past. In addition, it's impossible for an ordinary consumer to know the safety of medications, and the quality and healthfulness of foods. The food industry screamed that they'd go broke putting on nutrition labels on containers, but it hasn't hurt them a bit.
