Not CFD, but she does do FEA on pretty large models (crash analysis on subway cars). Honestly, though, it was mostly because I got tired of explaining to her that she should expect the computer to be sluggish when she has more than 64 tabs open in Chrome...

I have a piece of posterboard with strips of all sorts of patterns from 1/4" to various 1/2" data tapes. You use the Magnasee, allow it to dry, then lift the pattern off on Scotch tape and preserve on the posterboard. Jon

(Today, I think the COBOL compiler as well as JCL monitor do accept lower case, but I don't recommended it. Going back years, we got in Xerox printers that could print in lower case and I found that lower case headings had some advantages in complex reports. COBOL didn't care if a literal in quotes was in lower case. I started using the terminal as a poor man's word processor. The Xerox printer could be dynamically set to print in portrait mode in the Prestige Elite typeface, so the documentation looked reasonably decent. In the early days of PC's, a few people got 24 pin printers, which had a decent looking typeface, but most people seemed to get 9 pin printers, which IMHO looked like hell. Yet, computers had become so fashionable and "hot" than sending out a letter done on a 9 pin printer was still 'cool', and using a traditional Selectric was 'old'. I thought the early Apple printers, with their funky looking typeface was ugly, but they were cool, too.

Years ago, someone walked into my office and handed me a manual for the Xerox 9700. I set about writing software enabling every feature of the printer I could find. Lot's of listings started getting printed 4-up double sided. I enabled a whole slew of word processing features and the developers just loved not having to write documentation long hand and then go through endless proof cycles. A year or so later, the word processing department was holding a fair in the lobby advertising their services. I walked up and said, "Hi I'm Dan Espen". The woman at that table, said, "yep we know who you are". -- Dan Espen

There was no page description language, only raw bitmaps, unless you use the JDL Interface for line-mode data. I wrote an AFP converter for 9700 and 4090s, which was an "interesting" experience. This performed similarly to a package called "Laserpage" which we had previously used (but was not reverse-engineered from it, Bruce Armour, it was all original code.) Now Xerox printers have caught up to the rest of the world and use PCL, Postscript, or AFP directly. -- Pete

I'd started with a couple of 9700s and I think and 8700. When the IBM AFP printers showed up my task became making all the stuff the 9700 could do available on the 3820 and 3812. IBM didn't make it easy, but eventually I succeeded. Oddly, the 38xxs had an x9700 compatible font which was all fixed width except for one character. So, my sample documentation which showed all the fonts and all the characters had this one character that would mess up character alignment pretty bad. Eventually, I figured out how bitmapped page overlays worked. While we were sending out paper documents, the standard procedure was to print one copy on the x9700, and destroy that beautiful appearance with a copy machine. I found that if you told the XEROX to print 25 copies instead of telling JES to do so, the Xerox would spit out 25 originals in no time at all. >> Now I have little use for printing. H3, leads to the parent H2, H2 to H1. Tables of contents appear throughout. All tables are sortable, just click on the column header. Try that with XPDF. -- Dan Espen
