Its transmission is mediated by mosquitos, and not just any species of mosquito, either. Higher risk? Most people that get Zika don't even know they have it, which is fortunate since there no treatment (yet). The big concern is microcephalic infants born to infected mothers. Even that hasn't been established beyond doubt.

The previously uninfected person never went to where the one that got infected went, and there are no mosquitoes of the right type when the uninfected individual got infected, so its likely to be been by sexual contact which certainly happened.

It seems that it can be spread by intimate contact. How many pregnant women that get it have affected babies?. There was a fuss a couple of years ago about a similiar thing called Schmallenberger (sp?) that affected sheep, with sheep that had the initial disease having dead or faulty lambs, it became clearer later that this did not happen in most cases. Was it possible that the initial disease was only harmful at the exact moment of conception?. Mosquitoes are not a problem in Ireland, but insect mites are, is the disease spread through these as well. Probably, in some obscure scientific magazines, that sort of data is available, but the popular press is a bad source. -- greymaus . . ...

I'll take a wild guess, was it guys working for Gov. Chris Christie? The question is not whether she was at risk but that the people of the US might have been at risk. There are no fences around New Jersey. Recent reports sound like what used to be obvious are not so obvious anymore. I think this country dodged a lot of bullets, not just the nurse situation, in the Ebola outbreak.

I was paying attention at the time, and it was clearly reported that the politicians grossly exaggerated the risk to other people under the specific circumstances. There was no need to incarcerate her or other people (some other Republican governors did likewise). It was also reported that conditions and customs in the U.S. are significantly different than that of Africa, so that infection was a much higher risk in Africa. A hell of a lot of people travel to the US from infected areas, and if there was a real risk, it would've hit the U.S.

They're found in the Southeast, primarily Florida, southern Texas, and Puerto Rico, but seasonally as far north as Nebraska to New York. And a narrow strip of the west coast. Zita is spreading in Puerto Rico, so far all the cases in the continental US seem to trace to non-US exposure (or sexual contact with those victims).

Malaria is spread by female mosquitoes of the Anopheles genus. The continental US definitely has those. Zika is transmitted by a different mosquito, the same species (A. aegypti and A. albopictus) as dengue fever and chikungunya. You can get dengue in Hawaii, Florida, or in Texas along the Mexican border (it's endemic in Central America).
