How about "Employers don't want to give employees paid time off for voting, and in many states extended voting days/times have been cut by Republicans, who want to keep poor people/minorities/young people from voting because those groups probably won't vote Republican."

In all my years of voting, the time it took was almost always very short--very short lines. In off years, no lines at all.

The ballot doesn't contain an identifier that can be associated with the voter. The envelope containing the ballot is signed by the voter and is checked against the voter rolls. The ballot is removed from the envelope before being tabulated. "After receiving some complaints about the lack of privacy of voters' signatures, Santa Cruz County changed to envelopes with privacy flaps. The envelopes work by allowing the voter to sign the ID envelope and then fold an opaque flap over the signature, sealing it just below the signature itself; elections staff can then pull a tab to reveal and check the signature, leaving the ballot sealed in the envelope. We've got those, too, but also (not sure if for all elections or what happens in the boondocks) early voting, where you can go a booth at City Hall and vote if you're not going to be able to do it election day at a polling place. We use scan machines that retain the paper ballot, so that check counts (I think, 1% of machines) and recounts (there was a statewide one a few years ago) can be done. The statewide hand recount of every ballot showed very few machine "errors" (some because the voter had not followed instructions but still had left enough evidence to figure out their intent), though the original election results (Coleman winning by 215 votes out of 2,885,555) flipped (to Franken winning by 312 votes) largely due to the results from 933 absentee ballots that had been improperly rejected by human officials. I think there was one batch of 133 ballots from a single machine in a single precinct that could not be found, and they ended up trusting the machine on those (pretty evenly matched) results. The recount was hugely satisfying, not so much because my candidate won as because the tiny delta gave one confidence that the results weren't being tampered with. But it did take weeks to conduct.

When the husband checks his wife's (in remote areas of Idaho and Utah, adjust count appropriately) or childrens'? The employer his workers? The preacher of the Westboro Baptist Church his flock? Am I crazy to think that these situations could (and do) occur? That's where the rightwing pols should look for electoral fraud, instead of immigrants (who know they'd get deported if caught) or cons (who probably don't want to risk going back to the pen, at least not for something with so little monetary return). Though I think voting rights should be restored to cons upon release, even if they're still "on paper" (probation or parole). In fact, if the cons in prison are going to be counted as population when calculating voting districts, they oughta be be able to vote absentee from the inside. Of course, in state or national elections the numbers would be lost in the noise. My grandfather didn't believe women should be allowed to vote; he demanded that his wife tell him how she was voting, and then he'd vote the other way to negate her vote. Being smarter than him, she told him the opposite so he'd double her vote rather than negating it--but if he could've seen her vote at the dining room table rather than having to take her word for it, that wouldn't have worked. They'd march the voters to the polls and monitor how they voted to ensure they voted "right". Imagine what a machine could do with a non-secret ballot.
