In theory you could do it after, but you also need to eat, pick up the kids and feed _them_ because they could be stuck at the polls in line with you for several hours, so that's not very realistic either. However, there are ~50,000 people of voting age, so this works only because typical turnout is 1-2%. If everyone actually showed up, it would take ~500 hours (21 days!) to handle them all. Of course, if you leave the line after 7p on election day, you cannot get back in line, so even if you brought a 21-day supply of food and water, you'd eventually get kicked out for using a restroom (or maybe arrested for not using one...), but if you didn't, you'd die before ever seeing a ballot. What a choice! Also, think about the social and economic consequences of nearly the entire adult population (except felons, of course!) disappearing for up to 3 weeks at a time, several times per year. (It was nowhere near this bad with paper ballots since the number of people voting simultaneously was limited only by the amount of flat space and pens/pencils available.) Your city seems to be pretty screwed up in that respect. My city (population > 1M) has hundreds of precincts - my precinct covers about 10 square blocks/400 homes (and the polling place was in a neighbors garage until a few years ago - for the past few years it's been in the utility building of a local church). We have four voting machines, but most of the long-term residents use vote-by-mail.

All of those employers let me go vote. All of them. Didn't dock me for pay either. Some even got panicky when some of us said we didn't have the time and they made sure those employees without a ride got to vote. We really need a new breed of labor unions. But sadly, existing unions are stuck in the 1950s, fighting ancient battles and totally irrelevant to today's workers, and incompetent as well. The national unions in Washington just suck in dues and give nothing in return.

Age discrimination is a violation of federal law too. That's why no employer would ever do such a thing. Can't imagine why there are persistent stories about it happening. You figure that Manpower (pick your favorite labor contractor) is going to pay you if you leave the customer's site (perhaps many miles from your polling place)? People, and especially poor people, are well aware that doing anything that annoys your employer is liable to result in undesirable side effects.

I remember banners on the hood. I have no idea who she was an agent of. She always seemed apolitical to me. One of our neighbors had a very expensive car, much nicer than ours, on blocks in the garage. We kids used to go in there, to look at it, I guess. It was quite dark, garages didn't have lighting in those days.

Of course, the reporters, well talkling heads, on tv may have been told by their bosses to not mention it. I watched part of some babble last Sunday morning with Chris Wallace and Karl Rove talking. They did their best to blame Bernie for the people protesting against Trump's racist remarks. Why they didn't have the backbone to blame Trump for Trump's action is kinda weird. But those two wouldn't know a fact if it showed up on their weekly show. What do you think Karl Rove's agenda is? I would think he would like to preserve the Repubican party, he's much too old to switch sides now. People who watch that program know who Karl Rove is, why not make Trump look like the spoiler he is?
