However, he wasn't debating whether or not we live in a functioning democracy, so your point is indeed valid: at least theoretically, the government is acting on behalf of the society as a whole - which is unlike what unelected criminals do. His point, though is: A society has authority over its members? Who said so? Where do they derive this authority from? Individuals have the right to defend themselves against acts of aggression, but _no_ individual has the right to _commit_ an act of aggression. And why should there be any limits to that principle? Why should 999 people think they have a right to tell one person what to do, or take things from that one person, and so on - in respect of actions of that one person that don't violate the rights of others? So, basically, one can have criminal laws - prohibiting theft, assault, and other crimes with clear actual victims - but no regulatory laws, no drug laws, no zoning laws, no taxes, no conscription, since all of these things are attempts at aggression by the majority against the minority. Why is this position unsound? It may be staggeringly impractical, but it certainly appears to have a sound moral basis. Basically, the principle is: you don't get to push other people around, no matter *how* many of your buddies you get to go along with you. That seems to make sense; if something is _wrong_, then it doesn't matter how many people want to band together to do it, that doesn't make it right. John Savard

Except that the reality is that politics is about human emotions, not cold logical facts. Further, different groups of people have different priorities about quality of life. What is allowable "pushing around"? Many years ago, it was fine, even desirable for cops to shoot people or rough them up. Today, attitudes have changed, for example, how to deal with a fleeing suspect.

Testimony in the Oct2008 congressional hearings into the pivotol role that the rating agencies played in the economic mess last decade ... was that they were selling triple-A ratings on toxic CDOs when they knew they weren't worth triple-A. http://www.garlic.com/~lynn/submisc.html#toxic.cdo TV news commentator during the hearings said that it would be unlikely that the rating agencies would ever be federally prosecuted because they were able to blackmail the federal government with downgrading the government credit rating. Other testimony was that it is enormously more difficult to regulate something when it is incented to do the wrong thing. Prevously rating agencies were paid by the buyer ... so it was in the interest of the rating agencies to do as good as a job as possible for the benefit of the buyer. Then the rating agencies changed to the seller paying for the ratings ... and they become susceptable to the seller willing to pay more to get a higher rating. The triple-A ratings largely enabled being able to do over $27T 2001-2008 .... and also enalbed opened up being able to sell to operations restricted to only dealing in "safe" investments like large pension funds (claims that it accounts for 30% loss in many funds and trillions shortfall in being able to pay pension benefits). There is the joke if you use a gun to steal several hundred ... its a felony and you can be put away for a long time. But if its wallstreet stealing trillions of dollars and ruining tens of millions of lives ... you can buy congress and walk away free. There is problem now with for-profit prisons resulting in the US having the highest incarceration rate in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_incarceration_rate The issue is the for-profit prison industry has heavily lobbied for large numbers of non-violent offenders getting long prison sentences ... they get paid per head and non-violent offenders having the lowest prison overhead/expense costs. When that isn't enough they bribe judges to send them lots of non-violent juvenile offenders (even lower overhead/expense cost/head). I have no idea how I triggered that response but I was very pleased. Is this the buyer paid era you're talking about? If that was it, selling subscriptions, I'm not surprised it changed. My interest was after Xerox was common but it was a model that would suffer badly from Xerox machines.

Indeed, people do that all the time by choosing where they live, what jobs to take, etc. Of course, they must make tradeoffs with their choices. But there are lots of people who chose to move far out in the country where they could afford a lot of land to be isolated from the neighbors and live in a town with limited zoning, etc. Others have chosen to decline a high paying corporate job from something simpler. In years past some people (e.g. gay or unmarried couples) would live semi-underground so as to live their own lifestyle. [snip] I suspect what is happening to many people today is a feeling that their needs are being neglected by society while others are getting favorable treatment. Unfortunately, we have different groups with opposite viewpoints--in essence, the poor think the rich are cheating them and the rich think the poor are cheating them. Blacks feel whites are holding them down, while whites feel blacks get extra favors.

Apathy is certainly a problem, but IMHO that is a symptom of so many races being noncompetitive/uncontested, or having to choose the lesser of two evils rather than someone the voter actually agrees with. All I can say is that in Philadelphia, not exactly a wealthy place, it is dense enough so that the polls are located within a few blocks of most people. They're open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., which covers most work hours. As to kids, parents simply bring them along (kids like to push the little buttons). The state tried to create an ID rule, but the courts, properly, struck it down. The lines aren't very long, even in peak elections. But turnouts are terrible.

Training is company requirements, there is no way that person can justify you not getting paid for it. When I took my CompTIA IT certification tests, I got paid milage and got paid for my time as it was for company requirements. And it took me over an hour to drive there, one way. Modern employers can, and very now do, force employees to do all sorts of things that can not be "justified". It may be illegal, but it is extremely difficult and expensive to file a successful wage/hour complaint with regulators, let alone a personal lawsuit. Sorry to get political here, but part of the fallout of the tea- party movement has been an attack on business regulations and protection agencies. Governing Magazine has reported how agencies that once enforced wage/hour laws have been gutted with a loss of staff to process complaints, as well as revised regulations that allow for many loopholes. For instance, an old scam that remains very popular is treating employees as independent contractors. I believe it is illegal, but it's done a lot and enforcement is very weak. While some companies will compensate their staff, others these days make them attend even mandatory classes on their own time and own dime. As mentioned, I know a high corporate guy. I asked him if someone starting out today would be treated the same as he was when he started out years ago. He replied definitely not. Lower pay and benefits, no job security, and more pressure. For instance, the company paid his tuition when he went to night school in his specialty; not anymore.
