If you can tolerate a quite stiff rate of inflation, then the government can print it's way out of debt. This only works up to a point, some part of the economy, most will say a good majority, will still have to fund the inflation. Just as with taxes. They tend to break down around 50% of general GDP intake. The inflation tax regime breaks down earlier. The populace and the commercial entities will protect themselves from the inflation, unless forced to no do so. These elements of force will become very intrusive as inflation rises. The 1%'ers are already using index funds to settle debts. They are not necessarily in dollars anymore, but in some index of some underlying valuable. To prohibit this will in effect stifle the financial sector totally. So, yes, you can, but then again you cannot. The US is eperimenting perilously with this at the moment. -- mrr

The Philadelphia Inquirer and New York Times both did major feature articles on all the many special tax breaks given to individual companies. The tax code actually reads, "for companies founded on July 16, 1907 in Philadelphia, there will be a deduction of ..." So, the breaks are for individual companies--practically mentioned by name! No one cared. You'd think the anti-tax conservatives would've jumped all over this, but their handlers brain-washed them to think "business=good" "social=bad".

one problem for congress outright selling tax exemptions for special
interest ... is that it was one time payment. congress had to come up
with a couple strategies to keep money flowing every year 1) facade
("kabuki theater") of conflict between different factions trying to
revoke/keep tax exemptions and 2) limit exemption lifetime that have to
be renewed.

That doesn’t explain the stuff that the Pentagon doesn’t want
and that Congress continues to fund because of the spinoffs
that it produces in the electorates of those that continue to
fund it even when the Pentagon doesn’t want it anymore.

Trouble is, in the US most "flat tax" proposals have been carefully written to avoid taxing the income of the wealthy (e.g. dividends, capital gains, options, inheritances) and the middle class (mortgage deductions). And don't apply to "persons" who don't happen to be natural (corporations). So the poor would see their taxes rise, while the rich saw theirs fall. We don't need to make drastic changes to get that outcome.

We don't need to make drastic changes to get that outcome. That's why the only politicians pushing a "flat tax" are the puppets of billionaires and corporations--or are billionaires themselves. The same politicians extol the virtues of eliminating "loopholes", but when you ask them for specifics, they suddenly can't name any because doing so would anger all the billionaires and corporations who _paid_ for all of those loopholes. I did see one guy suggest replacing the income tax with a VAT of 30%, which _would_ solve all of those problems (and create new ones), but he promptly disappeared from the political scene. The problem with any flat tax system is that it sees the stinking rich pay a lot less tax than they currently do, and the desperately poor whose income isnt just welfare from the govt paying vastly more tax than they currently do. Currently the entire bottom HALF of the US pays no net federal income tax. It would be completely mad to go for a flat tax just because of the corruption that is seen.

A threshold for a flat tax can be introduced. People would get a tax refund.

No it does not, most obviously with those who can not manage their financial affairs and need to have what they can spend their handout from the govt on restricted to food for their kids etc instead of drugs and booze etc.
