How, by charging higher premiums for policies with higher deductibles? Obamacare is not cheap nor is the coverage particularly good.

Whose success was mostly in the area of persuading the government to repeal the regulations that had prevented the private sector from succeeding. You can't take an example where the government regulated an industry into bankruptcy then nationalized it and repealed the regulations as "success", only predation.

Even though the regulations that the railroads brought on themselves, slowly bled them to deficits and bankrupcies, were lifted well before (1964) Amtrak went into service (1970). This was a reaction to the fact that railroads made zero efforts to make a service product. Even with buses. -- mrr

Even with buses. While Amtrak has its challenges, the reality is that it has, for the most part, done a far superior job than the private freight lines in running passenger trains with very limited resources. Amtrak does require a subsidy, but it is much more efficient than the freight lines, and thus the subsidy per passenger is much lower than before Amtrak. Many pre-Amtrak trains were horrible. The New York MTA's LIRR and Metro North also do a far superior job today than their private ancestors.

No. It took about 15 years after Conrail began for railroad deregulation to take effect. Conrail had to rebuild the total disaster created by the incompetent Penn Central management. Conrail also had to rationalize bad decisions made years ago by greedy robber barons who overbuilt railway lines that weren't needed. In addition, lots of other railroads in the U.S. did just fine despite all that regulation. Conrail is clearly an example of government success after a private mess.

The challenge was to provide examples of services that had been offered by the private sector and were successfully taken over by the Federal government. That you do not know the difference between being taken over and being originated, the difference between the US government and state and local government, and that given recent news items "water supply" is a really bad example all suggest that you are an example of why "schools" is another bad example.

Pretty much all of the above fit that definition, with the possible exception of superfund cleanups, which no private company would have the incentive to do. Gratuitous insults elided.

At one time some highways were privately owned. They were called "turnpikes" after the access control mechanism. Water/waste were (and are) indeed privately operated, when dwellings were few and far apart. But when you get cities, that gives you cholera. Yes, Flint shows that if you have a governor who doesn't give a crap and will cut anything to save a nickel, no matter how essential, government can screw it up. Government is not perfect, especially when slash and burn types are at the helm. I notice you didn't quibble about public health, medicare, or social security, all of which took over services that private business were inadequately fulfilling. Superfund etc. is where government took over cleanups of messes made by private businesses that just didn't give a damn. Because, basically, once there's no longer money to be made, private businesses don't give a damn.

I see lots and lots of highway construction. Not that many new roads, but we've pretty much completed Ike's vision of highways every where. Now it's interchanges, upgrades, etc. Until a Republican gets to be in charge. With Republicans we get a new game. Close toll booths to punish the evil liberals. -- Dan Espen

Weren't the tollbooths owned by the evil conservatives? Maybe two sides are too much for you to handle?

I'm sure those 2 sentences are intended to refute something I said, but I can't make the slightest bit of sense out of either of them. First sentence: I don't consider conservatives evil. Never did. Why would toll booths be owned by anyone other than the port authority? Why would the port authority be considered conservative. Second sentence: In any system where there is disagreement, any more than 2 sides is confusing. What makes you think I can't handle the issue? -- Dan Espen

Not by port authoritys. Not even close to explaining the first sentence. Private individuals are not equal to evil conservatives. Not that colonial roads are relevant to anything. -- Dan Espen

The only recent privately funded highway I know of was in California, and the company went bankrupt within a few years because it couldn't collect enough tolls to pay off its bonds. Texas has been selling 30-year leases on its highways to private toll operators and using the money to cover shortfalls in revenue to pay for overdue repairs on other roads, but they'll run out of highways to sell long before they run out of deferred maintenance to do, and then what? > I see lots and lots of highway construction. And borrow trillions from China because, despite all their campaign rhetoric, they never actually reduce spending; every dollar they cut from social programs means a dollar of tax cuts for billionaires and another dollar of corporate welfare, i.e making the deficit worse. There are few privately owned toll bridges. One is on the upper Delaware River. It's nicknamed the 'apron lady bridge' because the toll collector is a lady who stands on the yellow line collecting the toll in her apron (they may have upgraded since then.) Notably, there was a major toll bridge leading to the NJ shore. The owners went broke, leaving it to the state to take over the bridge and make many repairs. There are many small ferry boats that are privately owned and operated, but represent a key link to an island. > Texas has been selling 30-year leases on its highways to private toll > operators and using the money to cover shortfalls in revenue to pay for > overdue repairs on other roads, but they'll run out of highways to sell > long before they run out of deferred maintenance to do, and then what? I have nothing against govt owned and operated highways and airways. However, I get annoyed when conservatives bitch about Amtrak's subsidy, when highways and airways get far more money from general tax sources-- beyond set aside user fees. The airline industry never would've gotten off the ground if it had finance, build, and operate its own airports. If we waited for private capital to build key toll roads and bridges, we'd have far fewer of them and they'd be much more expensive to use. > Maybe in stagnant Rust Belt states, but new toll roads are sprouting > like weeds in the Sun Belt due to sustained population growth; even > upgrades to existing highways are breaking the budgets because the > Republicans refuse to raise gas taxes--even just to match inflation. Highway costs are higher than mere inflation because modern safety standards are greater than in the past. (I think the comment about closing tollbooths to punish liberals was an indirect mention of how Gov Christie's people ordered tollbooths to be closed on the GWB to foul up traffic in the towns of uncooperating politicians.)
