That's better than a thought that crossed my mind recently. I'm not a fan of Donald Trump's Presidential bid, although I think that there are other Republican contenders who would be even worse. However, I recently saw a news item about what I think was an unjustified criticism of his fitness to serve as President: that his wife, Melania (nee Knauss) doesn't talk much. I'm not aware that Jacqueline Kennedy said a whole lot to the press during her husband's term of office. Anyways, this inspired me to consider a reaction to Ivana's statement... Both approaches can work. Switzerland does health care funding that way, making private insurance compulsory. Private insurance is compulsory in the US too. The obvious downside with that approach is that its much more expensive than a single universal single payer system, essentially because of the extra overheads that any insurance system has. Its no coincidence that Switzerland has the second most expensive per capita scheme in the entire world, second only to the US with nothing special results wise on the measures that matter like infant mortality, years in good health, lifespan etc.

No they are not. And even if they were, what those at the bottom of society get from the NHS leaves what happens to that group in the US for dead anyway. And the US does in fact have a single payer system, Medicare. The problem with it is that it isnt universal and is only applicable to a small subset of the population. It does work well for them tho.

My big complaint is that these are paper, amounting to six or seven pages with the usual government/medical boilerplate. I signed up for their online system, but I fear that instead of a simple email they're going to ask me to sign onto their website each time to review the notices, which means I'l now never look at them. (The last thing I need is another site to remember and another userid/password to keep track of.) Oh well, at least I've achieved the first half of my goal, which was to reduce the psperwork. That's odd. I broke my arm and had skin cancer and never found out what was paid on either of those. I always refuse, as a matter of principle, to accept computer involvement so my stuff is not going to some bit bin that I don't know about. I do get communication about stuff they refuse to pay. AIUI they have several regional firms they contract with to handle this stuff for them. The arrangements must be non-standard. They have switched services over the years so I have to look carefully at mail with a weird address.

I could always save the result as .csv if I wanted. Ah, but one must consider _why_ there is a difference. Some of it goes to shareholders and executives' golden parachutes, of course, but most goes to handling claims. Each claim denied means the total payout to providers is less, but the handling costs remain. Assuming the same results, is it better to collect $1000 and pass $980 on to providers or to collect $500 and pass $400 on to providers? (Whether the results are the same is another matter.) A major source of income to insurance companies has always been the delay between when the insured pays his premium, and when the insurance company pays out on a claim. That money is invested. In health insurance, sometimes the insurance companies sit on a claim for _months_ before paying it out. I had a family member who had to wait a year before they paid out claims; not a fun experience.

Every health, dental or auto insurer I've had paid providers directly; how promptly they did so was the provider's problem, not mine. I've only had one homeowners claim, and the contractor I wanted to use (because he was doing other, unrelated work too) wasn't set up to bill them directly. The claim reimbursement check arrived before my visa bill did, so I was the one making money on the float in that case. If private industry handling costs are 10x those of medicare, then something is really wrong.
