Well, no. Its not easy to block it. The forced upgrade doesn't show as
Win 10. GWX  Xontrol panel wil block it.

Clearly MSFT is not going to stop until all their platforms are
bringing in revenue on a periodic basis.

How reasonable is it to keep using a platform that leads to
that future.  You can put it off, but you'll never stop it.

	Yeah I don't go quite so far back with UNIX - System III about ten
years later than you was my starting point, but I met some older stuff
later. TBH I never really got to Windows I left messy DOS first for
Interactive (no TCP/IP, broken make - getting X11 going was interesting),
then Linux and wound up happy with FreeBSD.

In any case you can disable the update service or block Microsoft in 
your router--it's not really that hard to defeat "forced updates".

Cool it. These things are tools. Some are like cheap drills, but
others are like DeWalts. A good craftsman will have many of them, 
of different types and quality grades.

Ditto for the IT experts. Linux, in half a dozen distros, at least
3 BSDs, a windows or two, perhaps QNX and MacOS, and the iOS
and android ones. In about this proportion.

Windows is a sideshow in all the projects I have been involved in, 
but admittedly I am working in a rather narrow niche.

Sideshow meaning you aren't writing any Windows code?
So far, no Windows coding for me either.

Made me giggle.

I do a LOT of web page documentation.
I can't be bothered to check IE.
I ask why they aren't using Firefox, don't they want to
browse safely?
Of course a few people don't see the humor, they repeat the corporate
"Standard Browser" mantra.

I recently got fancy and did a bunch of hierarchy charts using SVG.
When someone using IE said they couldn't see all of it, I said too bad,
I guess you have to wait until corporate lets you use a working
version of IE.

But this documentation is "extra" to the job.
I can get away with doing what I want.

This is for consulting for operators that have large numbers
of private customers. 

We have to support the default browsers for mac and windows, 
plus iPhones and android. But they only need to show simple
text and forms, and not format stuff totally outragously.

But it will need checking.

They have recommended browsers. Chrome or firefox/seamonkey. 
Stuff is required to look good there.

But the customer is always right, so the minimal functionality
will have to be there. Even in IE.

Unfortunately, probably not.  Microsoft is like Trump - the demise has been
predicted often, but never seems to occur.

The discussion of data interchange systems using microsoft products in
another thread has me shaking my head.  Why do organizations not mandate
that such systems be based on open standards instead of the proprietary
junk of a pirate monopolist?

Yeah, we run all Linux here, and I have kids going to various schools and 
universities.  The universities all seem to be moving to this horror called 
"Blackboard" to do all tests, grading, study guides, etc.  They tell you 
right up front that ONLY Microsoft Windows xxx can be used to access the 
Blackboard system.  Well, actually, late versions of Linux and Firefox seem 
to work most of the time, but the older versions do NOT work, as they said.  
Then, the Blackboard servers are chronically overloaded, so each mouse click 
takes a minute to register, and the connection is dropped periodically.  Not 
nice, when you have an assignment that needs to be completed at a certian 
time or you get a zero!

Actually, I'm not totally in favor of that.  If everybody ran Linux, then 
the script kiddies would start developing nasty malware for it.  yes, it 
would be harder, but if they try hard enough, they would find the 
vulnerabilities.

The problem with that argument is that there are some very juicy Linux targets out there.  Your bank (and for that matter, everyone else's bank) for example. And yet, Linux malware is thin on the ground.
