I know that I wasn't real popular when I ate the soft bit out of a loaf I was sent to get from the shop at one time. Cant remember if I was ever asked to get another after that.

When I was a little kid, my grandmother took me to see the equipment room of the old Times Square "zipper" display. That's back when it was electromechanical, big, and loud. I don't think this was an official tour - if it was, we were the only people on the tour. Some years later, my parents took me on the Hershey factory tour (back when it was still real, not the fake one they've had for 40+ years now). We got to see all of the real factory stuff, including a problem with the Hershey's Kisses production which resulted in a shower of Kisses from overhead conveyors.

I didn't see any catastrophes, but I also went on the Hershey tour, somewhere around 1960, I'd guess. I remember there was a vat the size of a swimming pool filled with molten chocolate! They also had an amusement park. Jon

Judging from my visit to Hershey last year (to go to the (excellent) automobile museum) they make more money from tourism than chocolate now.

The Tillamook cheese factory in Oregon I visited two years ago was setup that way. They had free samples just before you got to the gift shop. Great fun. > > Still, as others pointed out, there's nothing quite like seeing, > hearing, and feeling the real thing. I've been fortunate to have visited the Blenko Glass works in W. Va. A couple of dozen people wandering around with gobs of hot glass on blow pipes or punties, working together, switching off to other tasks, returning just in time to help with the next step. Nobody missed a lick, nobody stumbled or deaked out another's way, nobody got burned. I dunno if that nearly balletic aspect of a hard day's blue collar work would show up on TV or film. On my only visit to a working steel mill, I sadly arrived at the rolling mill just after continuous red-hot railroad rail had missed a transfer from one roll to the next. It was all shut down and crews were out in the machinery with cutting torches, cutting maybe 100 yards of spaghettied rail out of all the places where it had ended up but shouldn't have. Looking on, my boot began to feel warm. When I looked down, I was standing about 18" from a pice of steel, maybe 10" x 16" x 30", an offcut from the billet they's started with, that was still red hot. Won't get that double-take moment in video. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

Fifteen or so blacksmiths, attending a nearby workshop, were there to see how the Big Dogs did it. I have a book on steel-making. There's all sorts of variations on how they handle the steel depending on what resultant qualities are desired. Lot of chemistry is involved. As I understand it, the US steel industry was pretty static for decades until they finally woke up and realized they had to get more competitive with the rest of world. So, around 1985, they got serious and eventually made significant improvements to the resultant quality. Unfortunately, for many companies, like Bethlehem and LTV, it was too late. US Steel is still in business, but much smaller. The Roebling Works, that made the cable for the Brooklyn bridge, closed their specialty mill down in the 1970s. The gate house was preserved and turned into a little museum about the mill (everything else was demolished and required a cleanup). Interesting stuff, although most visitors are quite elderly. obcomp: They have paystubs on exhibit, apparently produced by an NCR bookkeeping machine designed for payroll. But I read they got an IBM 650. Since a lot of workers were paid by piecework, payroll processing must've been complex.

At the Sydney NS mill (now long closed) I asked about the big propane tank outside, did they use that to heat steel? No. The oxygen lance inserted in the open hearth steel burned away inconveniently fast. So they put an annular pipe around it and blew propane in around the oxy jet. At the temp of molten steel, the endothermic catalytic cracking of the propane more than offset the combustion, reduced local temp and prolonged the lance life. There's chemistry and we haven't even gotton to the chemistry of the steel itself. > As I understand it, the US steel industry was pretty static for decades > until they finally woke up and realized they had to get more competitive > with the rest of world. The cleanup of the coking plant at Sydney went on (or, very controversially for the neighbors, failed to go on) for decades. They'd dump a carload of coal in between retaining walls suitable to hold a carload, get it hot enough to coke (I don't know exactly how) and then drench it with water, then scrape the coke out into another rail car. The runoff water went into holding ponds that became leaky reservoirs of toxic hydrocarbons. > Interesting stuff, although most visitors are quite elderly. > > obcomp: They have paystubs on exhibit, apparently produced by an > NCR bookkeeping machine designed for payroll. No, its nothing like it. Coal is much larger organic molecules, many more carbon atoms than oil has, that's why it's solid and not liquid. Coke is coal with the volatiles driven off by destructive distillation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coke_(fuel)

Yes, much better value for iron making. There was a lot of charcoal shipped > from America to britain before coke started to be used, Not sure how true that was, haven't seen any stats on that. also woodash, > potash, for glassmaking. Unsurprising if that did happen much.

Charcoal became dear enough in England that investors thought it potentaillay profitable to establish an ironworks in Massachusetts in 1649 near what is now Saugus. More or less wilderness with vast stands of good coaling wood, bog iron nearby and limestone close enough to haul it to the site. The very latest indirect process tech: blast furnace, forge shop to "refine" the iron into wrought iron with a huge power hammer, all water powered. Also a small rolling and slitting mill to make nail rod -- ca. 1/4" square stock. And don't overlook that this was a risky transatlantic industrial investment when the political events in England were reaching a frenzied and unprecedented peak of instability! (Charles I beheaded in 1649.) AIUI, the notion was to make the iron in Massachuestts, ship it back to England to be worked into products and then ship the value-added products back to the colonies. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

Some facilities have "by-product" coking ovens in which the volatile hydrocarbons are mainly used, after purification, in a separate combustion process to generate energy. Non by-product coking furnaces or coke furnaces (ovens) burn the hydrocarbon gases produced by the coke-making process to drive the carbonization process. This is an older method, but is still being used for new construction. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coke_(fuel)

My brain hurts. Well, on the way in, the liquid hydrogen fuel for many rockets goes around the bell first in little tubes to help keep it from melting... John Savard
