A physical visit conveys much more of the feel of the real thing. When I was in middle school/high school I got to visit the telco switching office (still relay-based and it made a hell of a noise), a couple of labs, a machine shop, a glass factory, etc. I expect a TV prog would have conveyed far more theoretical knowledge, but none of the experience.

In spades with aircraft and even cars. I got the same thing a couple of months ago, had a day to piss against the wall in Sydney. Went to our PowerHouse Museum which is one of the best of the technology museums. Kept thinking as I wandered around the mostly static displays with most a card describing the significance of each one, how much better a doco could have done each display. My guess is that the lawyers have pretty well eliminated industrial tours from the face of the USA. That would be a shame because they were the best part of the last few years of grade school. I remember visiting the Merrill, Lynch, Pearce, Fenner and Beane offices. Bunch of old geezers sitting on uncomfortable oak chairs watching a blackboard and just waiting to make their killing on the market. Less fond memories. I think we spent two or three days determining whether the guys were sitting or setting.

We had some really great school tours of industry back in grade school. But in hindsight, I am amazed that they allowed children into production areas, including food preparation. For instance, we had a fantastic tour of a commercial bakery, right up close to the mixers, fermentation room, ovens, and wrappers. Little kids being little kids, undoubtedly some kids sneezed into the dough. I am amazed no kid got his sleeve caught in the machinery. When we visited the US Mint, we watched from a gallery behind glass, which wasn't as much fun. We assumed that was for security reasons, not safety. (Kids grabbing free samples. Heck, we each got a free loaf of bread to take home at the bakery).

I don't think anyone got a line of type (being lead, probably not good for a kid). However, the type was used to press a mat, and they gave us old mats, which were neat to have. In hindsight, some of these facilities handled tons of tour groups every day--plenty of school kids, as well as the general public, too. I presume they figured the expense of having tour guides and handouts was good p/r. When I got my free loaf of bread, plus some goodies, I certainly came home and told my parents to shop at the store from now on because of the great way they treated us. But some tours were boring. The zoo was hordes of bees flying around, despite bee traps all over. The textile college and agricultural school were boring. I thought the archaeology museum was boring, though the other kids liked it.

Our teacher said it was a good buy as proof sets go up in value. When it came, we were disappointed as the coins were wrapped in cheap cellophane. The point of a proof coin is its flawless mirrored finish. But the cellophane wrapper prevented appreciation of the quality.

Afterwards, there were free samples, oddly enough they had soft drinks for the kids, making me think they bottled soft drinks there too (but much later I realized they were probably there for any visiting kids). Sadly, I don't remember much of the tour. Getting behind the scenes at various aquariums was more interesting. And at one museum in Denmark, I was given a flintlock mechanism. Michael
