Are any of the n-axis tools run by hand or are > they all hooked up to a computer? Many hand-controlled tools can be automated--the table on a milling machine is typically moved by two wheels or cranks--one way to to automate it is to set up a stepper to drive those, which gives you a two-axis machine. You usually won't see more than two axes being worked simultaneously by hand and doing two simultaneously takes a good bit of skill, kind of like drawing curves on an etch-a-sketch.

There aren't just those two alternatives, CNC machines are in fact an intermediate approach where the machine is driven by a set of instructions that are normally prepared by a computer and transferred to the machine using some media like paper tape in the old days. And you now have 3D printers as well, currently not quite in the same class as the biggest n-axis machines, although a few are using 3D printers to build stuff as big as houses etc. You don’t see them used to build the biggest bridges and skyscrapers tho, those are still assembled using parts made in various ways. And the highest volume production of stuff like car parts isnt normally done with 3D printers.

It's gradually being replaced with additive manufacturing (start with nothing and add the elements you want). Also known as 3-D printing. Uses less raw material, produces less waste, is faster and requires less final finishing and is capable of producing hollow parts, something that most milling machines have difficulties with.

There is a lot of variety a the high end, some only do metals (laser sintered powder is one approach, electro-depposition is another), some can do multiple materials. The idea is that you grow cells (pick your meat) in a bioreactor, decant them into a print head and print them onto a substrate to produce artificial steaks and suchlike which have never been cut from an animal. There are many fiddly details but that's the essence of it. You'd likely not recognize a modern automobile manufacturing facility.

They do, in docos like Ultimate Factories and Megafactories, and show you a hell of a lot more, and a hell of a lot better than any visit by a group of school kids can ever do.
