The lack of Canadian interest in developing super computers may

Unfortunately the US military is the driver behind a lot of the
 pressure to build better computers.   Peaceful,
 non-interventionist Canada is at a disadvantage here.  Maybe
 Canada should start building a weapons shield to protect
 themselves from their crazy neighbors down south

Haven't you heard?  We're so busy being hewers of wood and
drawers of water for the rest of the world that we don't
have time to develop a strong manufacturing base.

Did IBM ever have significant research or manufacturing facilities 
in Canada?

Does the soda, "Canada Dry", have anything to do with Canada beyond
the name?

Historical note:  When IBM was still C-T-R, I think it adopted the IBM 
name from its Canadian subsidary.

Since 2008, it is owned by the same Texas company that makes Dr. Pepper.

However, originally, back in 1904, John J. McLaughlin of Enniskillen, Ontario 
got into the new carbonated water craze with Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale.

During Prohibition, it was popular as a mixer because it tended to cover the 
taste of poorer-quality booze.

But it was bought by an American interest around 1964.

Let's not forget the French island of St. Pierre and Miquelon.  How do we
know France hasn't installed missiles there and plans to attack the U.S.?

We do know that the Governor-General of New France, ordered Pierre-
Joseph Céloron to lead a military expedition through the Ohio area. 
Its objectives were to confirm the original French claim to the 
territory, determine the level of British influence, and impress the 
Indians with a French show of force.  Céloron threatened citizens 
with severe consequences if they continued to trade with the British.  (wikipedia).  

So, there is a precedent for France using military force to compel
the United States to trade exclusively with France.
