On the Interstate just outside of a major city, driving a 40' rental truck with a defective defroster. And we got freezing rain. Lots of traffic (it was the night before a major holiday), lots of people in the ditches. With my flashers on, driving as slowly as I dared. One of those situations like walking on wet ice, where any move at all may destabilize things. But pretty soon I couldn't see much but patterns of light through the ice (that newfangled radar would have been nice, except that keeping going wasn't a good idea either). So I took an exit, as slowly as I dared. Put one wheel on the ramp, and Mother Nature said "ok, I've got it now" and steering and brakes stopped working. I knocked down a light standard (turns out they're very lightweight, huge but 2 guys could easily carry it off the roadway) and a few hours later a tow truck with a winch managed to pull me back onto the road. Road rated for 70mph, good for maybe 15 if that.

No, because that isnt a safe speed to be passing a school at when the kids are coming out or entering the school and there is nothing the 'built for' can do about that. > Unfortunately, 70 is greater than 55.

No, the original design speed is definitely not necessarily the safe speed. There are several reasons why: 1) Traffic volume and congestion is a factor in setting speed limits. If a road is congested, the speed limit will have to be lowered. As mentioned, traffic volumes have increased substantially since many roads were built decades ago. 2) Safety standards have changed over time. What was considered safe 50 years ago may not be considered safe today. 3) Roads, especially bridges, deteriorate over time. The Interstate Highway System, built 40-50 years ago, needs a lot of work. Many times the problems are not visible to the motorist, but very visible to highway engineers who inspect the base or underside of bridges. Also, trucks are heavier today than 50 years ago and do more of a pounding. The faster the speed, the more of a pounding.

Case in point yesterday, on a nearby road with an 80kph limit (default for country road less than 7m wide) there is a stretch which almost qualifies for a 100kph limit (if it were longer it would and on a clear dry day it is not uncommon for the average speed on it to exceed 100kph - at least until it changes into a narrower, undulating bog road) but yesterday when hit with sudden horizontal sleet with embedded hail I found it appropriate to slow down somewhat (I was already below the 80kph because the weather was iffy). The driver behind me thought otherwise and shot past at about the worst place he could have picked (straight across a junction, too near the end of the good stretch, insufficient visible road never mind the lack of visibility due to the weather) and went off as though it was a sunny day ... for about two hundred yards before reaching the back of a pack of slow movers on a stretch that nobody sane would overtake, so he hopped a couple of cars into the pack before it became completely impossible even for a lunatic to overtake. He remained two cars in front of me the whole way into town (a couple of miles) before we went different ways at a roundabout. Personally I've nothing against fast driving - but if you are going to drive fast you should be driving *much* more carefully than average not substantially less carefully. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

I was used to Ohio, where we get snow, and had the typical Northerner's arrogance about "knowing how to drive in winter". Well, I moved to Atlanta. We had an ice storm. I got about a half mile from my house, stopped, went back, dug out the chains, and put them on. There was just plain _zero_ traction. In Ohio (or CT, or any Northern state) the roads get sanded fairly soon after the snow. Atlanta has _no_ snow removal equipment. The snow or ice doesn't get plowed, it doesn't get sanded, it just stays there slippery as Hell until it melts.

And even worse, it can happen when the temperature is above freezing. I remember visiting somebody on a day when the temperature was in the '40s. Going I had no trouble. Returning, some time after dark, with the air temperature 40 degrees according to his weather station, I hit a patch of black ice on a curve and went off the road.

They have plenty of "highway equipment". What they don't have is snow plows and salt-spreaders for an event that may take place once every could of decades. The North doesn't have people trained to remove alligators either, for the same reason.

Having the right gear doesn't always work. In Chester, NS, one of the approaching secondary roads ran down a gentle grade, under a railway overpass and made a sharp left turn. The turn was due to a 30' or 40' drop-off were the road to go straight. Right at the corner, hanging on the edge of the drop-off, was a Stuart Smith's blacksmith shop. One night, the crews were out salting very icy roads. A large dump truck, bearing a plough and laden with tons of salt crept down that grade at very low speed....and failed utterly to turn. At maybe 4 mph, it went through half of the blacksmith shop, tearing the hanlde of the centrifugal forge blower without disturbing the forge or the rest of the blower. But half the shop cascaded, along with the truck, into the paved area 30' or so below. At that time, the NS Highway Dept. was self-insured so they built Stuart a new, more modern shop nearer his house and for a couple of weeks a crew of highway emloyees were down below the wrecked shop, surrounded by tubs, buckets and coffee cans. "One 3/16" roundhead rivet (plink), one ox shoe (clonk), one 3/8"x2" bolt (plink), pair of tongs (plunk), another 3/16" rivet (plink)...no, wait, that was a flat-head (scrabble, scrabble, plonk), one anvil (Yo, a little help here...)" Stuart said he got pretty well everything back, all sorted out and ready to go. -- Mike Spencer Nova Scotia, Canada

That might work - at the risk of increasing corrosion - but one problem is *when* to do it. Another problem here would be that if applied during the day when a freeze was expected then it would likely wash away in the evening rain before the night freeze - which might well not happen anyway. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Plenty of them still aren't and I have just taught a pair of them to drive. The woman isnt aggressive at all and in fact is much too timid and doesn't have anything like the same level of confidence. I just drove them to the state capital because they moved there for work after learning to drive in a town with just 20K people and no real traffic at all. Because they are just kids and were paying for the trip back for me, we used the train. I normally fly but that would have cost them 8 times as much because they left it to the very last minute to decide when they were moving. And then we ended up very late indeed, for other reasons and there is only 1 train home a day. So we ended up at the lights outside the central city train station just at the time the train was due to leave. I quite literally jumped out of the car at the lights outside the station. He wasn't very happy about that at all but did fine when it came to the crunch. In fact drove back into the city in the evening to catch up with me because I had managed to miss the train by minutes so it clearly didn't faze him at all. She still hasn't been game to drive the car in the city at all yet. And its not as if she is at all timid most of the time either. > Cops do not enjoy pulling them over; they get really nasty. You're flagrantly over generalising.
