Ah, but that's the new way to use turn signals: as a confirmation of
the maneuver you've just begun. ("I'm about to sideswipe you now...")
My pet peeve is people who are stopped at a light who wait for it to
turn green before putting on their left turn signal. Had it been going
before you got there, you could have moved into the right lane and not
been stuck behind the guy for a full cycle. But there I go, thinking
about others again... silly me.

I suspect that another cause of abrupt lane changes is people who
depend so totally on their GPS that they're not aware that their
exit is coming up. Suddenly they get the warning from their GPS
and they're in the left lane - so they abruptly cut across two or
three lanes to get to the exit. Better hope they miss you.

It certainly isn't around here. I have seen extensive simulations of the sociopath and old geezer elements in rush hour traffic. There are quite sharp breakdown points at around 2% of sociopaths and around the double of old geezers (running 15 km/h below the limit, and reacting slowly). They will both make the traffic go from smooth, even though somewhat slower than the limit, to stop-go with max speeds of around half the limit. -- mrr

I think of it in terms of a supersaturated or supercooled solution, which only needs the slightest disturbance to undergo a catastrophic change. It took a bit of getting used to for some people, who didn't select the proper lane before getting onto the bridge and found themselves going where they didn't want to go. When you're all reacting to the same event, rather than each other, then what matters is the _delta_ between drivers' reaction times, which is generally negligible. For instance, on one road trip, everyone was cruising along on the freeway at ~80mph in sunny, clear weather with rain so light even the lowest wiper setting was too much. Suddenly, visibility dropped to _zero_; I couldn't see the brake lights or headlights of other cars I later discovered to be less than ten feet away, nor the car in the lane next to me. Even after I put the wipers on max, I could barely see my own car's _hood_. The rain disappeared just as fast, and the freeway quickly returned to 80mph, aside from a bit of rubbernecking for the next 50+ miles at all the cars that had crashed or were stuck in ditches, sometimes both. This is not something you can predict. Even if technology can stop the car in response, it can't keep it in the correct lane when the rain/fog is so thick that it can't see where the pavement is, much less the lines on said pavement. It can if it uses radar for that and has kept track of where the lines are when it could still see them and assumes that they are still in the same place relative to the edge of the road once it cant see them for a while or uses high intensity illumination downwards to ensure that it can still see the lines on the pavement even in the worst conditions apart from snow on the ground.

There is an interesting tidbit of a data point from the variation of the speed limit on the ring road around Oslo, This is a pretty congested 4lane road with far too dense exits and onramps. It used to have 80km/h as a speed limit; they then tried 60 during winter, and settled for 70 year round. These have around 10 km/h added for the general traffic (you cannot deviate much from this without adding to the congestion, so almost everyone goes 80 now. The police unoffivially admits they have their enforcement at 80. The surprise was that the 70 speed limit actually increased the net car capacity on the road. 60 decreased it, but traffic went a lot smoother. The stop/go turbulence from all the entering and exiting cars went down by an order of magnitude. It is still low at 70. They tried 80 a few months in between, and then it was back. This will only be the case if the average distance is around half of the 1001-1002-1003 rule. (three seconds between cars). -- mrr

This gives the guy behind me a fighting chance. (I still keep an eye out forward and slam on the brakes if something suddenly appears out of the fog.) A full-out emergency stop - especially without ABS - can cause problems of its own, such as swerving out of your lane into other traffic. There's a place near me, good secondary road, just before a sharp left curve onto a 1-lane bridge, where a microclimactic temperature change can cause the windscreen to fog over suddenly and completely in a distance of 50 feet or less at appropriate (thus very moderate) speeds. I am curious as to exactly where that is. I would like to see if
I can see a precipitating condition.
Just outside my apartment building in front can get rather foggy
some evenings. It seems that I am at a transition point. (704 McGill
Road, Kamloops, BC. From there, look for the building by Dalgleish
Drive. The front is to the east.) The land in the whole complex
tends to slope rather sleeply.

When you approach the Mohawk river you sometimes encounter fog that starts abruptly, and ends just as abruptly on the other side. The point is on the main road along the shore (not the one that wanders off into the woods) perhaps 100 to 300 yards east of the bridge over the Petite R. The eastern shore of the river is maybe 50' higher than the western shore near the bridge. My guess is that the temperature (and humidity?) of a mass of air rolling down the narrow river valley can be sharply different from the air mass along the main road eastward that's more or less exposed to the open sea. > Just outside my apartment building in front can get rather foggy > some evenings.
