That kind of system has existed for decades and _nobody_ is willing to pay to deploy or maintain it.

From my limited understanding of the crash of Air France flight 447 in the Atlantic Ocean: When the "automatic pilot" got conflicting information from its sensors, the auto-pilot just gave up and shut itself off. So then the problem was dumped in the lap of the airplane crew... who evidently did *not* have enough training in handling adverse situations because they had depended too much on the auto-pilot in the past and did *not* receive supplementary training to keep them sharp. This is a criticism of the *system* and *not* the airplane crew. It is oh so easy to start relying on something... without being aware that you have started leaning on it. The problem is that they were "behind the airplane", a situation that use of a modern autopilot pretty much guarantees will exist. Watching an autopilot fly a plane is just plain _boring_. With the best dedication in the world, very few people can force themselves to remain focused on watching an autopilot fly a plane for many hours at a time, every day. People just are not wired to do that. So when the autopilot fails, it takes the human crew a while to get their heads into the current state of the airplane, even if they are the most skilled crew that has ever existed.

They had to guess that and got that guess wrong. Not when the sensors are working properly and the plane just keeps carrying on flying the way it was flying fine before the autopilot had decided that it didn't have a clue about the config of the aircraft. The pilots didn't either, for the same reason. The autopilot should have just given up, it should have done the best it could with the data it did have available and told the pilots very unambiguously indeed that the shit had hit the fan very spectacularly indeed sensors wise and that they needed to decide if the autopilot was doing the best that could be done in the circumstances and whether there was something that could be done to get the sensors working again, like descending safely so that the ice that had stopped the airspeed indicators from working could melt off and then show the airspeed again.

The pilot was an accomplished glider flyer and long time instructor, and could fly even with little instruments and no engines. The Air France crew didn't realise they had iced down and were practically in a stall, and were flying into the ocean. If they had realised, they could have landed on the ocean just like the one in the Hudson had. It would have been one heck of an evacuation, but still better than the alternative. -- mrr

Morten, have you ever flown a real airplane, not a simulator? I'm a licensed pilot and have had some sailplane instruction. Your notion that one needs some kind of special skills to fly without instruments is just _backwards_. Flying on instruments is much more difficult than flying by visual reference, what you call "instinct", which it isn't. The Air France crew were behind the airplane. That's the end of it.

He's talking about no viable airspeed indication, not the instruments you are talking about. > The Air France crew were behind the airplane. That's the end of it. Fraid not. The problem is that the airspeed sensors had iced up so there as no viable indication of airspeed, at night so it wasn't at all obvious even what the attitude of the plane was and the stall warning kept coming and going by design, so it wasn't at all clear to the pilots that it was stalled in reality or whether the same problem with the airspeed indictors was the reason for a false stall warning. They were aware that they had lost lots of height, but when it was in fact stalled, recovery wasn't possible because they were too low to do that even if they had eventually realised the plane had stalled. If they had understood what was going on, they could have followed the official unreliable airspeed indication procedures and the ice would have melted off and they could have carried on regardless.

Usually it's not a big deal, but if the airplane is in an unusual attitude or undergoing a rapid descent there might not be time to get caught up before an unrecoverable situation develops. When that happens the plane crashes. When the pilot is not actually flying the airplane but monitoring a robot, then it's much more difficult to stay ahead of the airplane than it is if he's flying manually and so when the robot craps out it takes a while to get caught up.

Oh, I understand that. One of my part-time jobs is driver for an
inventory counting company. I drive fellow workers to counts. Whoever
rides shotgun (sits in front passenger seat) handles a lot of those
non-driving details. If the temperature needs to be adjusted, the
music adjusted, watching for tricky exits, and other such, that person
supports the driver by doing much of this. Most importantly, that
person helps keep the driver alert.
I think that the situation is even more critical in the air.

Having the pilots critique the robot as it flies and having the robot snark at them might be just the ticked for keeping them involved. The problem there is making a convingnly snarky robot.

That wasn't the problem with AF447. The problem was that the pilots didn't do what they were supposed to do with no reliable indication of airspeed. Nothing bad would have happened if they had done that.
