We don't even have a thing that goes in the car any more. You register
all your cars and it just recognises the number plate.

That's an option with our system, but it's mostly there to accomodate
visitors. You pay less if you get the RFID tag. Presumably that's
because number plate recognition is more work for the tolling agency.

We had RFID tags for years, but they phased them out in favour of the
ANPR. It seems to work pretty well. I do have the old RFID tag in the car
still.

Yeah, it is a better system than RFID if only because it doesn’t
need anything special in the car and there is no need to have
a deposit on the RFID or charge for it and because it handles
visitors completely automatically, tho there may be a problem
actually getting the money out of visitors after the event.

Be interesting to know how well it works with the vehicles
that can't have a proper plate on the front like motorbikes
etc. No big deal if it doesn’t, its still a much better system
than RFID.

There are a few problems with that. Not with UK drivers, but those from
different countries. UK drivers are traceable and get hit with a hefty
fine if they don't pay (usually by the end of next day). The others tend
to get away with it but they're working on that!

Motorbikes go free, as do a few others. Here's an example of the one I
use most frequently:

Ours allows weeks to pay and we have separate states
too. Not clear what happens if you are from out of
state and choose to ignore the demand to pay.

Ours are charged the same amount as cars.
May be one reason we still use RFID for all
but visitors. And those who don’t have an
RFID pay more than those who do, in theory
because it costs the system more to process
them. Guess it does given they are billed
and those with RFIDs don’t.

It's terrible all the inflation that's been allowed to happen since 1933.

Giving change for $20 would be no problem if the change could include eagles,
half eagles, and quarter eagles, as well as silver dollars and half dollars.

In fact, the $20 itself could be a coin... a double eagle.

However, given that this is about $1,000 in today's money, such transactions
likely would not be entrusted to a mere vending machine that might be fooled by
clever slugs.

There was just as much of that in the century before 1933
and vastly more full depressions too, none since then.

The obvious fix is to use cards and phones exclusively.

And if you demand complete anonymity, a reloadable
card like so many of the public transport systems use now.

Nor would it provide a "paper trail" for the authorities to review at
their discretion. They don't particularly like cash transactions for a
number of reasons, none of which is for your personal benefit.

My point - the dollar coins used to be a fair bit bigger than the quarter,
and bigger than the half-dollar (remember them?) They were very easily
distinguished from other coins by touch. Somehow the geniuses that design
the coinage seem to have lost track of this. I understand the problem of
the blind. I use the "pocket test": can I pick the correct change out of
ny pocket without looking?

I find I have to look carefully at American coins to work out which
is which. There are three sizes of silver coins (in the pile I have to
hand). The biggest one says (in small indistinct letters around the bottom
"quarter dollar", the next one down says (in very small indistinct letters,
in a different position) "five cents" and the smallest just says "one
dime" around the bottom. In each case the amount is about the hardest thing
to find and read on the coin. Would it have been so hard to have a large 5,
10 and 25 on the coins - and make the sizes relate to the value ?

I have the same difficulty with American coins. UK coins are going in
the same direction. It's something to do with saving I can remember
when I could recognise UK coins by touch with no need to look at them.

When the penny was a large copper disc the halfpenny a smaller one,
the threepenny bit a smallish heavy 12 sided brass coin, the tanner a small
silvery coin, the shilling larger, the florin larger still and the half
crown even larger. Even the first decimal coins were easy - the same
shilling and florin renamed, a large seven sided 50p piece and copper coins
with size and weight proportional to value. The maggie when it appeared was
an oddity (smaller than the 50p piece and the florin - er 10p piece), but at
least it was very different to the others.

Arrant youngster!
I remember when a lot of Irish coins were actually UK ones at par.
Big, shiny pennies with "Victoria Regina" on the back, some with a youngish
Victoria, "Greasy Pence", as the poem said. Real silver coins, I think,
up to 1948 or so. With economic conditions, we didn't need much Irish coins.
Then to different currency, and then to the Euro, now people will not bother
picking up small change

People treat US coins like Canadian coins here (and the reverse was true
in the US, at least in the past). They are nominally the same value,
except for the exchange rate which can't be much even on 25cents.

I seem to recall using vending machines in the US and getting better
results with Canadian coins, or something like that, but that was decades
ago and maybe was specific machines.

What surprises me is that it doesn't seem that uncommon to find really
foreign coins in the mix. Coins from the UK, but other European countries
too. Not monthly, but every so often I get change and discover I've been
cheated, some coin that I can't use. I dont' know if it lands in the
coin stream by accident or deliberately, but the stores somehow get it and
don't catch the ones I am given. So maybe the coins enjoy a long life of
circulation, passing as some Canadian coin until someone like me notices
and takes it out of circulation.

   Michael

I took a coffee jar full of small change to the supermarket the other
day (they have a machine that counts it and gives you a voucher for the
supermarket) and was surprised to find there was a 1989 Canadian penny,
a 2001 American penny, and 2001 & 2007 US dimes in it. I am in the UK.

No idea how they got there.

There was a time when German vending machines got the occasional
shilling through the Mark slot - it made for very cheap cigarettes.

Some years ago I worked in Dusseldorf for a while & my German colleagues
were always keen to get 5p pieces.

(For our American cousins, the British 5p (aka shilling) at the time was
exactly the same size & weight as a German coin of a much higher value
(1 deutschmark? I forget))

Yep, that coupled with the much lower tax made cigarettes out of
German machines very cheap for British visitors.
