Makes more sense to take their license away for a substantial part of a year on the first offence and for years on repeat offenses. Not perfect because the worst of the drunks just drive unlicensed, but plenty do make sure that there is someone who isnt over the limit who can drive or get a taxi etc. > The _only_ thing that helps is locking them up, BULLSHIT. > but considering that the vast majority of people drive > drunk at least once a year, it is simply infeasible. Increased awareness of the problem has worked. I know of lots of people who years ago would've driven after drinking and now don't. Don't forget, they lowered the rate to 0.08. MADD is keeping up the pressure, and there's no real opposition. For decades, I've gone to the annual office Christmas party and after- work events. The amount of drinking and responsibility has changed dramatically over the years--people today are far more responsible. Heck, years ago people would have a quite a few drinks over lunch or take a discrete swig from a hidden bottle at their desk. New strict rules prohibit that sort of thing. I was on the party committee and dealt with the restaurants who hosted our parties-- and over the years they explained the new laws and lower cutoff levels. Public transit has become popular among young people who go to nightclubs, partly for that reason. The evening trains near me, which used to run mostly empty, are now filled with young people out to party; people who used to drive. > I can't recall how many times I've heard someone say they _have to_ > drive home because they're too drunk to walk or take a cab. They're > obviously too drunk to realize that means they're obviously far too > drunk to drive as well--or that they could get arrested. The concept of a designated driver for a group of people has worked; people are afraid of getting busted at a checkpoint or aggressive enforcement. The word has gotten out. Also, there are new liabilities for those who serve alcohol, so servers are more strict on cutting people off than in the past. > Under such conditions, tough enforcement just means putting more people > in jail for a few days and making them pay more fines before they get > back out on the road again--and drive drunk again. Well, obviously there are some repeat offenders, but the average person out most certainly does not want to lose their license for a year nor spend time in jail. The strict penalties--and higher probability of enforcement--is a deterrent. > The _only_ thing that helps is locking them up, but considering that the > vast majority of people drive drunk at least once a year, it is simply > infeasible. [speeding] > And that's the only reason it's tolerated. Crank up enforcement and > you'd have an open revolt. Well, they cranked up DUI (or is it DWI?) enforcement and even with Soviet checkpoints stopping everybody, there has been no open revolt. To my surprise, even the ACLU never complained about them.

Some cars have yellow* rear signals, which are pretty bright and visible through fog. Other cars have less prominent signals, sometimes mixed with the brake lights. IMHO, all cars should have rear yellow signals, not red. *I think my drivers ed book called it "amber".

In this way, you can see the tail-lights of the person in front of you. Of course, many motorists don't comply.

And with that level of fog it would be completely routine to have automatic sensors on the side of that highway that automatically light up warning lights well before the fog itself. you probably don't see an effing phasor from the > Starship Enterprise.

The nastiest fog encounter I can recall was leaving a perfectly clear dual carriageway only to discover that the slip road descended with no warning into thick fog giving perhaps 5m visibility. I was still braking when I encountered the kerb of the curve that I just could not see and wound up on the grass. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Even getting sensors that work properly in bad weather is going to be a problem, and getting a car that can handle icy roads, snow-covered roads, snowstorms, fog, and rain is going to be a much more difficult one. Unfortunately, for those of us looking forward to getting a self-driving car it will be a long time before the car does even nearly as well as a human in difficult conditions. Heck, I enjoy driving when conditions are good myself, the time I'd most want the car to drive itself is in bad weather. -- Pete

That isnt clear yet with running into other cars on the road, the sensors may well be able to do a lot better than any human can even in very difficult conditions just because they are irrelevant to radar. > Heck, I enjoy driving when conditions are good myself, the > time I'd most want the car to drive itself is in bad weather. I'd also prefer the car drives itself on long trips which are just too boring. I'd rather be reading a book etc. And I'd love to have the car drop me where I want to go and go and find somewhere to park itself and then be able to whistle it up with my phone to come and pick me up after I have finished doing what I went there to do.
