That's an option with our system, but it's mostly there to accomodate visitors. You pay less if you get the RFID tag. Presumably that's because number plate recognition is more work for the tolling agency. -- /~\ cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid (Charlie Gibbs) \ / I'm really at ac.dekanfrus if you read it the right way. Yeah, it is a better system than RFID if only because it doesn’t need anything special in the car and there is no need to have a deposit on the RFID or charge for it and because it handles visitors completely automatically, tho there may be a problem actually getting the money out of visitors after the event. Be interesting to know how well it works with the vehicles that can't have a proper plate on the front like motorbikes etc. No big deal if it doesn’t, its still a much better system than RFID.

There are a few problems with that. Not with UK drivers, but those from different countries. UK drivers are traceable and get hit with a hefty fine if they don't pay (usually by the end of next day). The others tend to get away with it but they're working on that! > Be interesting to know how well it works with the vehicles that can't > have a proper plate on the front like motorbikes etc. No big deal if it > doesn’t, its still a much better system than RFID. Motorbikes go free, as do a few others. Here's an example of the one I use most frequently: https://www.gov.uk/dartford-crossing-fees-exemptions-penalties -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Giving change for $20 would be no problem if the change could include eagles, half eagles, and quarter eagles, as well as silver dollars and half dollars. In fact, the $20 itself could be a coin... a double eagle. The obvious fix is to use cards and phones exclusively. And if you demand complete anonymity, a reloadable card like so many of the public transport systems use now.

They are nominally the same value, except for the exchange rate which can't be much even on 25cents. I seem to recall using vending machines in the US and getting better results with Canadian coins, or something like that, but that was decades ago and maybe was specific machines. What surprises me is that it doesn't seem that uncommon to find really foreign coins in the mix. Coins from the UK, but other European countries too. Not monthly, but every so often I get change and discover I've been cheated, some coin that I can't use. I dont' know if it lands in the coin stream by accident or deliberately, but the stores somehow get it and don't catch the ones I am given. So maybe the coins enjoy a long life of circulation, passing as some Canadian coin until someone like me notices and takes it out of circulation. Michael

I took a coffee jar full of small change to the supermarket the other
day (they have a machine that counts it and gives you a voucher for the
supermarket) and was surprised to find there was a 1989 Canadian penny,
a 2001 American penny, and 2001 & 2007 US dimes in it. I am in the UK.
No idea how they got there.

Some years ago I worked in Dusseldorf for a while & my German colleagues
were always keen to get 5p pieces.
(For our American cousins, the British 5p (aka shilling) at the time was
exactly the same size & weight as a German coin of a much higher value
(1 deutschmark? I forget))
