I used to give the pennies and paper bills. It would throw them for a loop. Item plaus tax costs $3.97 I gave the cashier a $5 bill and 2 pennies. Their brain froze up. I said, you owe me a dollar and 5 cents. Called me a liar, and the superisor came over. Looked at the total and what I gave the cashier. Handed me a dollar and 5 cents. Then apologized. In the United States, it costs 2.4 cents to mint a penny. In Canada, it cost slightly less, but it was still more than a cent. In Canada, our politicians are slightly less populist, and have been able to inflict the equivalent of the Susan B. Anthony dollar on the population, which has been helpless to resist. While I favor democracy as much as the next person, I can't think this is a bad thing. Avoiding the cost of replacing paper dollar bills is an important practical measure that shouldn't be held up because people are reluctant to accept it. Much the same might be said of metrication. For most things at work we just wave our ID badge, but the vending machines still want real money. I don't usually use them--there's a self-serve concession area that works on badge-swipe, but every now and then it's closed for whatever reason.

You just pay the default fee which is the average trip. And allows them to have completely automatic season tickets where what you pay is capped by the week or month or quarter etc too. All the user has to do is setup an automatic top up of the card once the level is below a specified level. It does that from whatever you tell it to top up from, bank account, any sort of card etc. You can also add cash as well if you want to be completely anonymous.

That has been available for a long time in London too. But people who only visit sporadically (like me) don't find it so convenient. But the non dedicated card doesn’t allow you to calculate at say the end of the day that it's a senior who has made lots of trips all over the place on that day and who will just be charged a total of just $2.50 for the whole day instead of for each of the trips. And if that person just does the one trip that costs $1, charge them just $1. And doesn’t allow day or week or month caps for anyone either where once you reach the cap, you can do anything you like trip wise for free in that period. And doesn’t gracefully handle when you forget to tap on or tap off either. In fact those cards all operate right thruout the entire state, not just in the state capitals. Like I said, the only real nuisance is that its a different card for each state instead of a national one.

It doesn’t handle the other situation where there is a fixed charge to go anywhere in the day, week or month but only charges you for the actual cost of the particular trip when that is less than the fixed charge that allows you to go anywhere as often as you like. > But the saving over not using a card is great anyway (50% or so). Sure, but you get that with the dedicated card too. In fact they no longer allow you to buy individual tickets either using cards or cash anymore, that stopped on 1-Jan-16 in Sydney. So they don’t have anyone selling tickets anymore and no ticket machines either. Yeah, the card completely replaces all season tickets and in fact all tickets of all types completely, so there is no longer any need for ticket machines at all or anyone selling tickets either. It can't with the non dedicated cards because there is no guarantee that the same card will be used at each end of the trip. With the dedicated card there is just one card. And 'ticket' inspection is much better too. The inspectors just get you to tap the card on the device they carry with them and if you haven't tapped on you get slugged with a massive fine. There are no tickets at all now.
