Again, simulators are good for this. The thing is, you can't "realize that it is happening" when all of a sudden the computer says "nope, not playing anymore". You have to take over immediately.

But in the AF 447 situation you are free to just keep doing what the computer had been doing flying the plane wise and just follow the established procedure that must be used when there is no reliable indication of what the actual airspeed is, and the plane would have carried on fine if they had done that. The ONLY problem was that there was no indication of what the airspeed was. The plane was flying fine and would continue to do that till the fuel ran out.

The big issue is how to tell whether something is a drill or is
real. That is one more piece of data. I follow RISKS and have read
of many accidents where the point of information overload has been
brought up.
Something needs to be done to have pilots stay engaged and alert
and be able to handle emergencies.

One purpose of automation is to improve productivity. Since we will always want a pilot, perhaps the level of automation has gone too far. This doesn't mean to go back to a DC-3, which I think required a radio operator, navigator, and flight engineer in addition to the pilot and co-pilot. But maybe the system should dial back a few notches. Recently, someone here quite accurately observed that modern computers are so automated that they do things we don't want them to do, and we can't control them. That is so true!

And today, many highway departments have special AM broadcasts along a major highway to report on conditions. If there is an urgent message, flashing lights tell motorists to turn on the station. Of course, the young woman I saw today flying up the road and texting away probably wouldn't notice such messages.

Their presence makes children realize that the government is run by fools, and that laws can be treated with scorn and contempt. Just the way their parents treated the laws and got away with it. "Convoy", about a truck convoy violating the speed limit, charted number 1 and led to a successful movie, which in turn led to a whole genre of movies in which violating the speed limit was a key element (one would have been the top grossing movie of 1977 if Star Wars hadn't come along)--a studio could pretty much count on such a movie making money even if it was lousy. On the road it was pretty much unenforceable--in California cops would drive 55 and bust anybody who passed them, on which even the rest of the folks trapped behind said cop would cheer and get on with ignoring the speed limit and whisper "THANK YOU" to the guy who threw himself under the bus to get that cop off the road for a while. In MA, they timed the toll booths--going from one end of the state to the other, if the toll booth times showed that you were going faster than 55 you got ticketed--the fix there was to drive 80 but stop for lunch en route which took the overall time down to an acceptable figure. Other states tried similar, failed expedients, and finally just resorted to having standing speed-traps in the vicinity of the Federally mandated speed sensors. And in the meantime, on the Interstates, everybody just drove 80. This is still pretty much the case--East of the Mississippi the norm for controlled-access highways is 70 and any cop will tell you that they set the radar gun for 80. West of the Mississippi the limit is typically 75-80 with some locations going as high as 85. However the "reasonable and proper" that used to be the norm in Nevada and Montana are gone.

Anyone is allowed to drive those "stupid electric mobility things" on the _sidewalk_. And they might be on the road at pedestrian crossings. If they're in traffic in one of those, that's not something they're allowed to do, especially if they're not licensed to drive a motor vehicle. They're driving on the shoulder, which is good since they're about walking speed, but sometimes the shoulders are quite narrow. A neighbor of my daughter got killed a couple of years ago driving one across (or maybe on) a road at night with (naturally) no lights and no reflective clothing, and he had been drinking. I don't think the driver was charged. I can't believe they're good idea outdoors anyway. They seem pretty stable, but in some places the pitch of the ground can be pretty steep. Also, do they have some kind of meter on the battery charge? My nightmare would be being out somewhere and having the battery run out of juice. When I fell off the ladder a couple of years back I drove around the market in one for a couple of months.
