TV showed chart today that Iowa caucus doubled the number of democrats in 2008 (compared to 2004) and almost all new members went to Obama, number of caucus members doubled again in 2012 ... and projecting if Sanders can get out new members for another doubling, he would win (repeat of 2008 against Clinton). It also showed something similar happening for Republicans, doubling caucus members 2008 from 2004 and double again 2012 from 2008 ... however, in each of those years, the total Republican caucus members were only half the Democratic caucus members. There was a report this morning on Aljazeera that one in ten people will participate in Iowa In my state, I would guess the participation is of the order of one in a thousand. That's based on actually going a few times and extrapolating from my precinct. It was a total waste of time - mainly a way to get fund raisers lined up for future operations. There were factions present, but if you aren't a political junky you don't even know what the factions and their positions *are*.

Sadly, the reality is that a lot of Dem voters, such as urban folks, simply are weak voters in any election. The Republicans will have a ton of corporate money for the next election, thanks to easy spending rules. I doubt I'll watch much TV this fall given the constant barrage of political ads. As to young people, I have no pulse on the national picture, but around here it seems most young people are either conservative or uninvolved. Relatively few would actually vote Dem. It seems that the Republicans have done a very good job in painting the government as incompetent and even evil, and painting the Democratic party as offering more of that incompetent government. It does not seem that the the Democrats have done a very good job painting the need and accomplishments of government, or protection of the middle class, or specifically how a Democratic administration will improve their lives. There is a need for unions to restore middle class prosperity, but unions have a lousy reputation, and unfortunately what's left of unions today don't do anything to improve upon that bad reputation. The core Democrats talk about urban issues, but the old core cities have basically lost population and the growth has been in the suburbs or modern towns, where issues are different.

Demographic groups that support Dems have much lower turnout in mid-term elections, so Dems often lose seats then and gain them back in the next election. 2. Most "voter ID" laws, which disproportionately disenfranchise demographic groups that support Dems, started in 2014. But I had felt "guided" by the lack of a neutral response (like "i don't f*ing care", but I answered the "PC" line when forced. So, I went back and did it again answering the other direction. And landed somewhat on the right, like I expected. I came in the middle of the left libertarian area. My dot
overlapped the U.K. Greens. On shorter quizzes, I have scored as a
very slightly left libertarian.

It would be an interesting representation, though, and would make
for some fascinating discussions.

The Canadian political spectrum tends to be centered around the
bottom of the circle, while U.S. politics starts at the bottom
(or maybe a little to the left) and works up the right side.

Well, there's that, isn't there?
In some loose sense or other, I've devoted my life to trying to find
out just what's going on here anyhow. How does this work? Why?
Long ago, considered changing my major to psychology or philosophy.
Only took a quick scrute to see that neither would implement my
putative ambition. Not a chance. Stayed with chemistry.
1. Everything is stuff: chemistry.
2. We is the most important stuff: biochemistry, neuroscience.
3. People *are* chemistry. Nobody *does* chemistry, they do work
or play or muddle and most of it involves cars: auto mechanic.
4. But that's boring and peripheral. Food is not, it's essential
stuff: subsistence farmer.
5. Which needs utilitarian "stuff", much of it metal: blacksmith
(mostly not farrier.)
6. AI is going to upstage "what's going on here" any day now:
computers, networks, math and programming.
7. Assertion in # 6. is wildly wrong, misguidedly optimistic, even
with neural nets. What about economics?
8. Can't get through Econ 101 text due to blatantly false
assertions in Chapter 1. Turns out economics as it's practiced
is a religion, not a science. The economists trying to do
science are ridiculed.
So I still wonder what, exactly, is going on here.

Politicalcompass.org puts the 2015 Canadian Conservatives even
further up and right than Thatcher.
And Joe Sixpack doesn't usually spend a lot of time wondering about
just what's going on here. When he does, he wants a one-liner for an
answer.
