And I just don't believe that all you housing developments on what used to be a farm etc always have sidewalks there because that isnt the case anywhere that I know of. Same with bicycle, if you get your drivers license removed for a period because you have been caught driving over the legal blood alcohol limit, or have been caught exceeding the speed limit often enough, or talking on your cellphone while driving often enough, you will have your license removed for a while, but are free to ride a bike during that time.

However, there are other calculations that I remember doing from first principles because I didn't have the formula memorized, and so I think the point of the person to whom you were replying was perfectly valid - even if your experiences and your point are perfectly valid too. There's nothing wrong with going back to first principles instead of taking chances with a formula you're not yet fully confident with. And there's nothing wrong with using a formula you _are_ able to handle instead of wasting time and doing stuff the long way. Do it the way that works for you and get the right answer. John Savard

Note that he spent most of the class sitting in the back reading his mail and then in the last five minutes looked up and tried to find something that he understood. And it wasn't a matter of his vast experience--the derivation was in a field with which he was unfamiliar.

The safety laws for cars and roads have changed. The changes to vehicles
may be slow but they do happen. When new models go on sale every 5 years
then new safety devices can be introduced, across the range, every 5 years.

Ban all Muslims from entering the U.S., and, hey, you wouldn't need all those security checks at airline counters! To be clear: the two paragraphs above aren't policy recommendations; they simply illustrate that _choices are clearly available_. Naturally, our leaders may choose more humane and reasonable responses, which is fine, as long as they yield the same results: NEVER another terrorist attack AGAIN. John Savard

I don't want to live in a world where terrorist attacks are made impossible. That would imply so many ramifications for our personal freedoms that it is unthinkable. I want to make it merely very, very difficult and have a certain outcome of death or life imprisonment for the perpetrators. This is the difference between good police(wo)men hunting for the terrorists with vigilance and having a military state controlling your every move.
