Even 20 years ago, one venue here was using an Atari ST for it's ticket booth. I assume they got in "early" and there was a whole package using that computer and specific software, so they had to keep using it later than intended. There was a time when you could see Radio Shack Model 100 laptops in McDonalds, doing something, again probably a package using sofware specifically for the whatever it was doing. So maybe a PET was used somewhere because of the IEEE-488 buss. I can't see why that would fit into a travel agency, but since the PET had it built in, it was a way to get a "cheap controller" for such peripherals. If there was special hardware that needed it, so long as the PET met other requirements, I can see someone creating a package and selling the computer with the software. And the PET did have a built in terminal at a time when that wasn't so common, which might have been an advantage. Michael

A close examination of this show, or any TV show or movie, for technical accuracy will yield a great many errors. Indeed, when computers are or were shown in a production, often components of different manufacturers were mixed together in a mish-mosh. For instance, scenes on a TV show are often filmed on different days. They try to be consistent from day to day with props, but sometimes they're off. Very often, in what the viewer sees as a single scene, the character is using different models of telephone sets. 99% of viewers wouldn't notice it at all, but a telephone collector would. Likewise with trains--the 'same' train could be shown with different locomotives of different railroads. In the case of "The Americans", it is filmed in the NYC area, even though some subplots take place in the Soviet Union or other cities. One urban scene was very clearly in Queens, NYC, under the No. 7 elevated, yet was supposed to be in Philadelphia (they didn't bother to change the street signs). One railroad station scene was supposed to be in Russia, but was an LIRR station with a few Russian posters. (Some movie, taking place in NYC, was filmed in Phila, and they did change the street signs and subway station signs, making 22nd & Market in Phila look like Sixth Ave in NYC).

SNL had to hand-make Tina Fey's bead-fringed outfit for her Sara Palin skit. The original was no longer available. I was at a rehersal for the local Opera Company the other day, and was told that for a show last year, they needed 20 18th century ball gowns. The bill was $90,000.

In an actress' memoirs, often they will talk of a particular costume of a past work being very uncomfortable.

Without getting into the weeds of this thread, I'd just like to point out that VT100s were "standard" serial-line ASCII terminals, and did not necessarily need to be connected solely to DEC equipment. DEC had a thriving terminals division that could well have been a stand-alone business, and the VT100 was just one of their products, although it was perhaps the most popular. Many VT100s were used on non-DEC computers. or paired with a modem for dial-up access. That being said, in 1982 few companies outside of the computer sector would have terminals of any kind on every desk. More likely in many business would be very selective deployment and/or a shared terminal room. And I doubt embassies used computers much at all in the early '80s -- what would be their application? Certainly not word-processing of sensitive documents -- too many security problems. Even if they did have a computer and terminals, they would probably be located in a back room, out of sight of visitors.

In 1982, at UTC Hamilton Standard, which makes space suits among other things, there were IIRC a dozen or so terminals on the third floor for the engineering department which consisted of several hundred engineers and a somewhat larger number of draftsmen. Most of us were not allowed to touch the terminals--if we wanted to run a program we had to submit it in the basement as a card deck--the terminals were dedicated for CAD and were only to be used by people designated for that function. It was the old "high priests and acolytes managing worship of the IBM God" in full force. The next place I worked, the only computers we had were PCs, but there were only 5 of them in the whole company. And at the next job there were three PCs with about 30 VT-100 clones-- that would have been in the early '90s. A computer on every desk didn't really come along until some time in the late '90s or early '00s.
