Aside from the fraud (on both sides), the fact that the loans were aggregated (or sliced and diced) made it possible. So there are ways. Never forget, the status of "corporation" is a grant of privilege from the government. Without government, it does not exist. Not that it matters. If you're limited to staying on only your own land, and the land of others who permit you access, you're probably not going to get far enough from home to grow a business, nor find much of a market for it.

And most can be framed with a victim, one way or another. Seems to me you'd have the options of 1) staying at home until you starve/freeze/or if you're lucky, dying of old age or inbreeding because you can't go a'courting, 2) introducing the possibility of violence, or 3) if you have a silver tongue, negotiating a solution (which you'd have to do at every property line you wanted to cross). I'm actually curious, are there other solutions?

Corse you have a problem with how essential stuff like bridges are done and how you end up with a decent highway etc instead of a dirt track forever.

The US plus junior partner Canada (which has been unrightfully scoffed after 9/11) and soon-to-be partner Mexico [1]. The EU plus outlying partner areas; CH+EES++, China, India; even Mercosur in South America is making this song&dance, even if they are at par with Pre-EEC Europe at this time. China and India are continents in their own right. The gloriously lacking parts are Africa and the Middle East; which are locked down by repressive national governments and strict borders. (Yes, there are some hopeful areas; like the East African union etc. but they are like Europe in the 1920s.) And the Pacific Rim are locked out of the mainland, which is still a desirable state of affairs; but for how long? -- mrr [1] Trump has totally misidentified the current US immigrant problem. Mexico is now at par with where the US was in GDP per person in 1962-1966 (depending on measurement) and is catching up reasonably rapidly. The reason Mexicans now emigrate is high differences between rich and poor, and insecurity because of the drug war. Both of these are pretty fixable with efforts from MX(gini factor) and US(drug war). Mexico is also rapidly becoming a production ground for US companies; to rival China for the right products. The cash remittances between Mexican families now have twentysomething percent going INTO the US, to support family members that are sick and out of work there. This is new the last 5 years. The border that needs defending now is the one south of Mexico. For that, the US must partner with Mexico. Like the US partnered with Canada up until 8/11/01.
