I come from a place which banned slavery in 1172 (although existing slaves could be worked for 30 years and then freed, so 1202 is the real date). Yes, we were in union with Denmark, which allowed slavery. But no slaves were ever to set foot in Norway without being freed. There were at least 6 different legislations until our own constitution of 1814, and all of them had the ban; and the preparations for each clearly stated (where available) that this was the state of affairs, just making a new codicil. Yes, we had slave ships and slave captains, but these were in the service of other nations. As a client kingdom until 1905 we didn't have the military power to do anything about it. But this means we should not have any collective guilt about this; whatsoever. Whatever guilt is squarely placed on the individuals that parttook. If any nations have guilt here, count us out. So, the international suit against ~30 western nations, us included, for perpetrating the slavery should be cast out on this grounds alone. -- mrr

Blacks (and Asians) in the USA, Caribbean and South America can count as
victims of slavery. But Blacks in Africa captured and sold the slaves.
Being principles to committing the alleged crime the African blacks and
their countries have no legal standing. Bringing any such legal action
is therefore just a price increase. Most courts rules to prevent the
court from becoming a debt collector for the crooks' illegal activities.
In fact the African and Arab countries should be paying compensation to
the American blacks.
Britain created its West African Squadron to suppress the
intercontinental slave trade by blockading Africa. The Squadron started
in 1807, which ensured that the military of the Western countries were
not involved in enslavement of Africans after that date.

I can sort of understand the kids who deliberately do badly in school and commit lots of petty crime - all kids want to be accepted by their peers. On the other hand, this is a lot of what's keeping them back. Also, single parent families and unmarried mothers raise kids who are on track to fail. Some try to blame slavery for this, but it's relatively recent - until the middle of the 20th century strong black families were the norm. -- Pete

In thinking about it, sure it would be nice to get a plot of land for free (assuming they survived the arduous sea voyage and were able to get free land.) They didn't call a contractor and have a house built while they stayed at a Holiday Inn. They didn't go to Home Depot to get tools and supplies. They didn't call out for a pizza for lunch. They had to do _everything_ for themselves, take care of illness, raise children, settle disputes, make their own tools, fashion their own supplies, get all their own food, etc. As best as I can tell, life in Colonial times was pretty cruel. Mother nature was quite cruel, and people were cruel to each other.
