Yes, I am aware of this. And I do have trust in the Airline
manufacturers to have decent security on their aircraft, also
when it is controlled via radio.

The car manufacturers, on the other hand... not so much trust.

And they have been playing with just the right tools to hack
into car control via mobile networks.

It just takes one big hole, and a network of terrorists
to exploit it.

That's why you get a couple of people to stand
in front of it and behind it, to stop it moving.

When you can fiddle with the code that runs everything, you can
make it do anything you like when you have filled it with explosives.

That isnt going to work. All you have to do is find one that is driving
itself around with no one in the car, get a couple of people to stand
in front of and behind it so it has to stop, plug the wire link in and
reprogram it and then load it with explosives after that etc.

Those are the ones stopping the car so they can use
the wire link to anything they like to the self driving
car to make it a completely unstoppable car bomb.

How is all of that going to keep a car with a bomb in it from driving
into your facility and blowing up?

In fairness to the automobile industry (whom I dislike), when they did
introduce some safety features decades ago, most purchasers were not
interested. For instance, Studebaker introduced a good safer car, but
it had few buyers.

It was only when the government mandated safety features in cars that they
were included.

The fatality rate (per miles driven) has gone down substantially over
the years.

Auto safety is the three E's--education, enforcement, and engineering.

They've done a lot with engineering, both in cars and on highways. But
the public hates enforcement (except on their own street), and they
could do more with education of adult drivers.

Given that so many motorists drive too fast in bad weather--as shown by
the constant multi-car pile ups on interstates--we need more education.

The fatality rate seems to be the most discussed. However, there is
also the crash (accident) rate, which isn't discussed, and also the
injury and property damage rates and costs.

I'm not convinced that education is actually the problem. Most
are aware of the problem but keep doing what isnt ideal anyway
like fiddling with the radio or phone while driving, or putting their
makeup on when running late, or just getting caught by something
unexpected like a car showing up where you didn't expect that.

> Given that so many motorists drive too fast in bad weather--as shown by

I'm not convinced that education can fix that particular problem.

It is by those who design the cars and roads and something
is done about the accident rate with ABS braking systems
and air bags and seat belts etc too.

and also the
> injury and property damage rates and costs.

The property damage rates and costs are complicated
question when crumple zones dramatically reduce the
fatality and serious injury rate, but inevitably make it
much more expensive to fix the car when it happens.

Yes, but... the people who die from domestic killings and accidents are
*not* killed in a few minutes by some foreign power or terrorist group.
That I believe is a significant difference.

Ok, but murders still take out a lot of people, far more so than any
terrorist group.

Train buffs sitting at a station merely watching trains go by get
harassed by the cops, while muggers do their thing with impunity.

Yes it makes it more noticable, in much the same way that a plane
crash killing a couple of hundred people is more noticable than ten times
that many deaths on the road. It's also much easier to point the finger of
blame to appease the howls that "something must be done".

Every plane crash that kills a bunch of people results in a lengthy
(and no doubt expensive) investigation, no small amount of legal activity
(often international) and some hefty damages payouts. It would be
interesting to see a comparison between amount spent per death for air
crashes to that for road deaths.

Even a major investigation of 1 in a 100 road accidents is likely to
reduce the number of deaths.

An air crash level investigation of 1 in a 100 road accidents, or
the equivalent work distributed over them would be about what it takes to
level the spend per death. Does it happen ? I wonder.

An air crash level of investigation of 1 in 100 road accidents. I am
assuming that most accidents have a similar set of causes. By finding
out what they and developing cures we can reduce the number of accidents.

Yes, usually stupid/incompetent/distracted/drunk/drugged drivers now.

We already know that.

Not even possible. The best we have been able to do is
to make the inevitable accidents much more survivable
than they used to be.

> we can reduce the number of accidents.

We have done that with changes in the design of roads.

I would guess that alcohol, driving while sleepy, and driving too fast for
weather conditions are right up there as causes of serious accidents.

If all cars had breathalyzers I would expect you could order cans of
synthesized exhaled breath to be available from Amazon.

Wow. There would be a market for those, unfortunately. In fact, now
that you've tossed the idea out, I'm surprised you can't already order
them.

For people too lazy to blow up a baloon while sober and keep it
handy.

Perhaps. But at the end of the year, if you're dead, you're dead,
no matter how it happened.

I doubt it. Because after an aircraft accident investigation there's a
chance that procedures will be changed to prevent it from happening again.
