While the desire to minimize civilian casualties is laudable, and the effectiveness of the methods used to do so suprisingly good, the unintended consequence is that the civilians in question don't feel particularly defeated. That's one thing that can be said for Russian and German methods, the people in the occupied territory understand that their continued existence is at the whim of the conqueror.

First, both Japan and Germany were very badly destroyed by the war, such as extensive aerial bombings, and in the case of Germany, a brutal invasion by the Soviets. Secondly, the military government of both countries was not running a summer camp, but rather a strict military occupation. It was made quite clear tot he citizens that their continued existence was indeed at the whim of the conquerer. Indeed, many citizens in Germany died from starvation and exposure after the war ended (as did others in the rest of Europe). Resources to help civilians were sent to Allied countries first, the losers got crumbs. I forgot the names of the miltary governors of occupied Germany, but they wrote books about their experiences. The Germans didn't have it easy at all. Indeed, I can't help but wonder that if some intelligent Germans recognized they had lost the war by June 1944, by which time the bombings were getting pretty bad and the Allies were advancing upon them on both sides, but perhaps Hitler was not interested in any surrender talk. In Japan, the military leaders refused to consider any talk of surrender, even after massive losses. They intended to have massive suicide waves of civilians armed with bamboo poles to meet any invasion force. (They were willing consider a cease-fire in place, that is, with Japan remaining a sovereign country and keeping all of its war gains, something obviously not acceptable to the Allies.)

His administration did quite well, but lots starved initially. That didn't happen in Germany. And what got the Jap economy back on its feet again was buying a lot of the low level military hardware used in Korea from Japan. It's less clear how much of that was due to MacArthur.

There is surely enough oil, we just have to be willing to pay for the investment of it's extraction. The US new producers have investment needs of $65-$110 per barrel. They did those investments when the price defended it. Now they have to produce to survive, but we will see a rather sharp decline in the capacity once the first two years are up with no new investments. That is towards the end of this year. The US is still a net importer; but so is Europe. Both now have consumption around 12 bbl/day and production around 8. The European ones are more conventional production; the shale fields in Poland were never developed; Europe did all the classical stuff about injection etc into older fields. The US with even older ones needed to be more creative, and that gave very good results. But all of this costs. Below $70 there will not be much new investment in such creative solutions, and production will again decay. This got both of us off the big hook. It is Asia, especially China plus the Pacific Rim that is truly on the hook by the large muslim nations. US+CA and Europe, not so much. -- mrr

Many, many years ago the production and price of oil was somewhat regulated to avoid sharp spikes in pricing and have an orderly market. Sure, people love the cheap prices today, but after production is discouraged and supplies dry up, we'll find ourselves back at $4-%5 a gallon again, or even shortages. Orderly markets are a desirable goal.

It's illegal to export crude without a license, and the US govt only issues licenses for Canada, which has plenty of its own crude anyway. If only it were that simple. OPEC selling oil at, say, $20 a barrel. The science exists to make oil from coal at $8 a barrel. No brainer, right? If the oil companies aren't building plants to do this, they must be trying to squeeze the public by selling all their oil in the ground at $19.99 a barrel first? Oops. It still only *cost* the OPEC countries $2.50 a barrel or so to pump the stuff out of the ground; that never changed on October, 1973. A plant to turn coal into oil at $8 or $5 per barrel or whatever would cost a billion or so dollars to build. Day after it opens, OPEC drops their price to $7.99 or $4.99 and you're out a billion dollars. Conclusion: free enterprise can't build such a plant, as it has no ability to monetize it. But the government could have built one. Blame stupid politicians who think the market can do everything. John Savard

During WW2 the Royal Navy prevented oil tankers from bring oil from the Middle East. South Africa also had them. Anti-apartheid measures included a ban on supplying oil.
