We _knew_ Iraq didn't have nukes or any connection to 9/11, and Bush/Cheney invented that story to justify invading; that is at least as criminal as Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Georgia, etc., where he can at least claim to be protecting ethnic Russians from persecution. However, in reality nobody from a UN Security Council country will ever be tried, much less convicted, of war crimes. That is a tool for them to use against _other_ countries, not against each other. > The invasion of Iraq was the result of Saddam Hussein not being fully > cooperative with U.N. weapons inspectors, leading to less than > absolute certainty - although the CIA *thought* he didn't have them - > that he wasn't hiding weapons of mass destruction. We knew he had chemical weapons, which _do_ qualify as "weapons of mass destruction", because he'd already used them on the Kurds. We knew he didn't have nuclear (or biological) weapons, though. Yes, Saddam was certainly trying and might have eventually succeeded, but diplomacy has kept Iran from getting them for decades despite us having far better excuses to invade them than Iraq. > Since, during the first Gulf War, *he launched missiles that hit > Israel*, which is an industrialized democratic nation, The missiles Saddam shot at Israel (which mostly blew up sand dunes or Palestinians) were all conventional; if not, we couldn't have stopped Israel from turning Iraq into one big puddle of glass. > which means this is just like launching missiles that hit France or > Australia or Norway or Great Britain or the United States, not even > the slightest chance of any more nonsense like that is tolerable. Funding is only one part of the factors that go into "capability". There must also be a political will--a willingness to expend lives--to achieve desired objectives. Very simply, the people of the U.S. do not want to sacrifice the lives of its soldiers to stop ISIS or other incidents, regardless of the rhetoric of some politicians.

That's really the bottom line. The US could have economically sustained the occupation of Iran and Afghanistan indefinitely and the cost in American lives was on the same order of magnitude as policing the US, but the political will to stay there until the places were stable simply did not exist. The same thing happened in Vietnam--the US had control of the country, briefly, and then pulled out before the government of South Vietnam was stable enough and well enough prepared to maintain that control.

Just takes time--the "old guard" has to die off, while you use the education system and popular media to secularize the kids, and then after that bunch dies off you have a population that for the most part wonders why those quaint old fogies were killing people about religion. At that point you have a stable society.

No, because when the losses are high enough like in Vietnam, those back home eventually decide its not worth the cost. > Just takes time--the "old guard" has to die off, while you use > the education system and popular media to secularize the kids, > and then after that bunch dies off you have a population that for > the most part wonders why those quaint old fogies were killing > people about religion. At that point you have a stable society. That is essentially what Saddam did in Iraq. Clearly didn't work. Ataturk did that in Turkey too. Didn't work there either. The communists tried that in Russia and China, didn't work there either.

Japan and Germany were stable and homogeneous countries dragged in the wrong direction by their leaders; we removed those leaders and helped them return to stability, and mostly, the people were happy with that. Bush thought the same would work in Iraq, but Saddam was the only thing holding Iraq together, so removing him had the opposite effect. If he'd died of natural causes, then maybe one of his sons or top generals could have done the same, but the entire country has been inherently unstable since the end of colonialism, so civil war was inevitable. Afghanistan wasn't much different, just with the Taliban instead of Saddam. Many GOPers want to do the same in Syria, but it's pretty much the same problem there, if not worse. Like Iraq, they've been due for a civil war for 50+ years, and the US intervening will not change that, merely make it even more bloody than it needs to be. The sad thing is that _nobody_ talks about the one thing that could solve all of these problems and bring peace to the Middle East (except Israel/Palestine, but that's another story): redraw the borders. I don't think that re-draw the borders solution is viable. With India, we ended up with Pakistan/India with unending border wars and only a partial separation of the antagonists. Oddly, here in America, all these ethnics just look like Americans (unless they are too dark). Rodney King had the solution. -- Dan Espen

The people of Kashmir (mostly Muslim) voted to join Pakistan, but the Hindu in control of the area overruled them and joined India instead; civil war has reigned ever since--and occasionally spreads to other parts of India. Balochistan and Bengal have similar post-colonial border problems. Move those borders to reflect the actual ethnic/religious boundaries, and all of those issues simply go away. I think you mean, move the borders _and_ the populations. There are many examples in history of how that works out. -- Dan Espen

Yes, some people will want/need to move, but that's undoubtedly better than living in the middle of an endless civil war. Also, borders should be designed to minimize the number of people who do want/need to move. Considering the population, two million migrants during the India-Pakistan split wasn't too bad--and most of the hundred thousand who died fighting (and many more since) were due to said border being put in the wrong place. If the British had listened to the people instead of appeasing an unpopular noble, most of those deaths (and much of the migration) could have been avoided. > There are many examples in history of how that works out. It worked pretty well in Yugoslavia, which followed the (unplanned) example of it working across Western and Central Europe. There's no reason to think it wouldn't work in other places with the same issue.
