That was the reason things got so bad recently because plenty slammed their wallets shut when there was considerable doubt about the future of the economy and their jobs and only spent on what was unavoidable.

The US will not lose their senior currency overnight. It took a revolution and then nearly 4 years to topple the ECU; and the pound took two world wars financed almost singlehandedly. First we will see inflation. In the beginning, not so much; 7-8 percent or so. Interest rates will make a 4-5% margin on this, at 11-13%. Just like the Reichsmark in 1918-1921. Occasional spontaneous drops of 5-8% will follow if the deficit is not addressed; typically in refinancing situations. This will compromise the state's ability to keep up with interest. This situation can last for decades, or it can spiral down in around 4 years. (5 or 10 years between most bond reissue events. You need at least two of these to make a dent in interest payments). Then comes the cliff. Germany, then #4 in the world in industrial production (after US, UK, France) went off that cliff in 7 months in 1923. Our national bank chariman Hermod Skanland used to collect inflation currencies; and had them framed in his office as a reminder to what would happen if he didn't do his job. Germany went from elaboratly printed 10.000 mark notes in March, to similar 100.000 notes in April/May, to 50.000.000.000 notes on cheap paper printed on one side in October.(1923). Austria, Argentina, Uruguay, Hungary and recently Zimbabwe has been through the same. When the cliff comes, it goes fast. But the US has a lot more buffers. It is the public's inability to see a bubble when it arrives. The speculators bring down the margins between buyer and seller, and act as market makers. This is beneficial around 95% of the time. They will sell in an instant if they think their money is at risk, and generally have a sane view of profit vs risk. It is the hoarders that make bubbles. Like the ones that bought real estate 2001-2006. Yes, this was fueled by speculation as well, but that was to blame on a rigged market; not on the profit-taking speculators. It was the hoarders that bid up this market to insane values. They kept the properties. The speculators owned them for weeks, at the most. If you see a million dollars right in front of you that can be made legally in a month or two with a small investment and no risk to yourself beyond the small investment ($20-$50k) ,, who wouldn't ? It is when law and morals diverge that we have problems. Do not require that the individual actors in a market think about morals. They have enough with the law and making a profit. While I think we will be able to stabilize the situation without going into hyperinflation, 8% inflation year after year is gonna be rough.

Some states face a nasty shortfall, and will have to jack up taxes or cut services to cover it, even some red states. Also, our economy is globalized more than ever, and an unexpected event that quickly ripple. Admittedly, as I write this, one of the causes of past inflation is acting the opposite--oil prices are plummeting (to my surprise).

Back when we had a little, I was a net borrower. Being in IT, my salary was outpacing inflation by a WIDE margin. Also, employees of weak companies, government, and non-profits were hurt as there were no raises, and their salaries fell seriously behind. Many weak businesses failed since the cost of supplies and raw goods went up steeply, but they weren't able to raise prices to keep up. But even continued inflation of say 8% year after year is rough since it compounds on itself, seriously eroding the value one's savings. Or, if a worker, say, gets a 3% raise each year when inflation is 8%, it's actually down 5% a year, and 15% over three years.
