The Manhattan Project and Apollo both worked because we knew up front how to go about solving the problem, it was the details that were the issue. Can you say that we know how to go about ending aging and just need to work out the details?

Obviously, the situations varies greatly with the type of cancer, of which there are a great many. It would be nice if they could come up with an inexpensive safe way for early detection of pancreatic and ovarian cancers. Just guessing: I wonder if early when cancer is present in the body, there is an extremely minute substance floating around in the bloodstream, something that is so small and limited that existing tests can't find it. Maybe a simple blood test is too small a sample of the body's chemistry. Maybe they would take a large volume of blood from a patient, run through a sophisticated tester (equivalent of an electron microscope), then return the blood back to the patient. Obviously a lot of issues would have to be worked out.

Even if that was feasible, you would find that everyone has what you are looking for in the blood and that there is no way to work out where its coming from and no way to stop what is producing that from doing that. The short story is that that production of what you are looking for happens all the time and the body fixes it itself. It's the times when the body doesn't that sees a cancer that eventually kills you.

In some cases at least, there is. Some such substances can be found by existing tests, and hopefully there will soon be tests for more of them. A PSA test can detect prostate-specific antigen even when other tests (e.g. digital rectal exam) come up negative; it spotted my prostate cancer in time to have it completely removed surgically. Things are getting better on the cancer front all the time. But as always, early detection and treatment is the most effective way of dealing with cancer. This is why I'm so infuriated by this attitude I've been seeing that people shouldn't bother with things like PSA tests or mammograms for fear of becoming upset by false positives. That isnt the reason for the objection to the PSA test, its because there are lots of examples of where a positive PSA test does not mean that you have a cancer that needs to be treated and when it is treated and produces real downsides with sexual function, you are in fact a lot worse off than you would have been without the PSA test when you would not have died of prostate cancer.

Frankly, while I think government should try to minimize such attacks, I also think there are limits to what a government can _reasonably_ do to protect us against such fanatics (like the attack in California). Unlike the rhetoric, many of the attackers were native born citizens. Conveniently forgotten was the guy in California was born in Chicago. Also, conveniently forgotten was the attack in Oklahoma City, by a native born American. The difficult part is that those attacks had zero strategic value; they accomplished nothing except the murder of a few innocent people. Further, the attackers are motivated by irrational thoughts.

In WW II, the Germans attempted some terrorist attacks against the U.S., but the men got caught before they could carry out the mission. Part of the intent was terror, although part of the intent was strategic disruption of critical facilities, such as major railroad tunnels. In the Spanish Civil War, I think terror attacks were utilized by both sides, although I don't know their effectiveness. I believe such efforts were called at the time "Fifth Columnists".
